Are they insane, or what?!?!

Recommended Posts

Found a great 6 day cruise on Independence for my family of four next winter. $2,900 seems reasonable for a family of four in an oceanview balcony.

Thought I'd price out Disney, since my youngest daughter realllly wants to try Disney. $4,900 for an inside cabin? Are they insane???

To get the same price on Disney, we'd have to do a four day. I don't know how I could swallow $2,000 more just because it's a Disney cruise.

I'm really shocked people out there are paying that much for an inside cabin!!

BUT...(fortunately or unfortunately) people are paying those prices! I imagine it has a lot to do with the fact that they're only sailing a few ships - supply and demand and all - but I have to agree that the prices really are insane!

We took my 3 year old on a Disney cruise a few years back and it really was fabulous. We were able to get a decent deal during Sept, but if you try to go during school breaks or summer vacation, prepare to take out a second mortgage! :D

There are a lot of people who are extremely loyal to the Disney brand- both in terms of travel, or even in other aspects of their lives. Disney does an extremely good job of nurturing this customer loyalty.

They also provide a very specific, very high-quality product. It isn't a product for everyone, but they know their strengths and capitalize on them. Their target demographic is one that appreciates what they offer and is willing/able to pay for it.

I'm not their target demographic- and I am happy that I have other options which are a better fit for me!

Yes, they are, but i think i can find better price than that for July Caribbean 7 nights inside, and for winter at least $1k less than your quoted dcl price for an ocean verandah, or <$100 per diem for an inside for 4.

No they are not insane, Its called supply and demand. There is a demand for Disney cruises and the supply is somewhat limited. Disney does a great job in marketing, and putting out a first class product.

I did my 2nd Disney Cruise last year (with the hubby and our 2 girls) on the Dream, one of the inaugural cruises. Don't get me wrong, the Dream was a beautiful new ship but my first cruise ever was on the Wonder...I would take that ship hands down over the Dream...or even the AOS with RCI...no, bigger doesn't always mean better but it's Disney, you pay for the name. The kids loved it but I bet they have just as much fun seeing Shrek and Puss in Boots near year on FOS! I just priced out a balcony, 7 day Disney to compare to our 7 day FOS for next year....they are already at least 500 more. If I didn't like RCI better, I would have better tried to convince DH to do a Disney again! My mom ONLY does disney cruises...that's it....it's true, it's all about loyalty! There's alot of mouse followers out there!

So $500 isn't as bad as the OP's $2000 difference.

Not sure if you have included DCL 10% OBB discount and OBC there.

Price difference between DCL and RCI really varies by ship, itinerary, time of the cruise, and time of booking. DCL price usually goes up the closer you get to the date of the cruise .... well, with a few exception :).

Actually, strange as it may sound, if they charged less, then you could rightfully consider them to be "insane". Apparently there are more than enough people willing to pay Disney's prices and fill their ships. It is all a matter of supply and demand and a question of what the market will bear.

Since you find their prices to be outrageous or out of your league, look at other cruiselines which appeal to similar types of passengers. RCI and its largest ships immediately come to mind and compared to Disney you may find them to be a bargain.:)

Insane? Not at all. There are people who will pay to cruise for the Disney experience. I for one have no interest in their cruises but think that they have the best looking ships exterior wise of any cruise line.

IMHO Disney charging the prices that they do is no different that RCI charging a premium price for the two big girls. Supply and demand.:)

Excellent point. I travel single and the minimum rates for Oasis/Allure are insane even with the Tuesday specials.

It is directly from dcl website. But previous cruiser who booked onboard will have 10% OBB. Price really depends on what ship, date, itinerary you are looking. Here are a few examples for 2 adults and 2 kids (age 8 and 10, based on price I get directly from dcl site now, include tax/fee, and include 10% OBB):

  • 12/9/2012 14-nights Panama Canal from LA to Miami: $5418
  • 1/14/2013 5-nights Wonder Western Caribbean from Miami: $1925
  • 1/18/2013 8-nights Magic Western Caribbean from Galveston: $3228
  • 10/19/2013 7-nights Fantany Eastern Caribbean from Port Canaveral: $3612

Don't expect these prices will stay this way for very long.

Yes, these are all during off seasons, and yes, I still can't say that these are bargain prices by any means (but seriously, I don't really want to see bargain price from DCL), but I honestly don't think these prices are insane. But I do agree that DCL's price to the Bahamas, Alaska and Caribbean during summer and Christmas /New Year are very high and insane .

If you have further questions, feel free to find out more in the DCL board.

But if you couldn't care much about the "fake people" and "weird costume" (which unfortunately, is not exclusive to Disney ships anymore ), and the fact that it doesn't have a casino, and the fact that you can carry your own liquor onboard without limit, then perfectly fine to stay with the line(s) you enjoy. That's the beauty of the choices we can all enjoy. :)

For me personally, I don't dislike any cruiseline - at least for now so far for the 4 cruises I've done with 3 lines and I enjoyed them all, each for different reasons.

Hope this helps.

I love my Walt Disney World, but I agree, I cannot see paying the WDW premium for their cruises.

What is a 10% OBB?

edit: it is a term wildly used in the DISboards.

10% onboard booking discount off the cruisefare, and fully transferrable if you move reservation. It usually comes with additional OBC and reduced deposit.

Here is the deal I had during my last cruise on the Disney Dream.

We priced Disney out of Galveston for Christmas. For a family of 4, the price is about $10K+ for a balcony including trip insurance. That's about $4K more than a mini suite on Princess or a D1 balcony on RCI. While we enjoy Disney, we find the cruise prices to be astounding. What is even more surprising to us is that apparently the ships are fully booked. Just amazing ...

I do love Disney, and I feel they do a nice job with everything. They really pay attention to the details and IMO the quality is usually top notch. Now...I didn't book a cruise through them because I would rather go on 2 RCI cruises even if it doesn't have that Disney quality. I am very much excited by RCI cruises and I know we'll have a great time no matter what!

Just my opionon...

Been there done that and I am a platinum member for DCL with no kids... I think it's worth every penny. I also just sailed the Dream last year when it first came out. I personally feel like it's like sailing on luxury cruiseship without having to take a long cruise, I like their short itin's and I am sure it helps that I am a Disney fan. But, the food is amazing, the service is top notch, their private island is beautiful, the onboard fireworks are a blast and I also love the fact that you get to eat at 3 different themed restaurants and not just the buffeteria and main dining room like on other lines. It's all the little details that make the ship and staff amazing. I don't think you'd ever have to wonder if the food will be good or if the ship looks run down or some of the other concerns you see mentioned on some of the boards.

PS

If you sail DCL the best way to get a deal with them and save money is to rebook onboard. I have a cruise in my back pocket for them and I only had to put down 1/2 the normal deposit, got 10% off the cruise rate and I got a great onboard credit offer (onboard credit offer amount depends on your sailing status).

PSS

I am sailing the Allure this year, because I just got off the Dream last year. :)

Recently there is a thread here about 1 cruise on Allure vs. 2 cruises on Carnival Breeze. It is about the difference in each of our choice and pretty the same kind of discussion.

Don't all of the Disney rooms also include a tub? That is a hug bonus for people wiht small kids and something you don't get until you move into higher catagories on the other cruiselines. The rooms also seem to be larger from what I have seen and allow more seperation of kids and adults.
