Aloonie Posted May 12, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted May 12, 2012 Maybe they just decided to arrive a little early. It is unusual though. Just went on Southampton port web site and it has a red mark next to Ventura saying arrival time has changed.
MattyBarlow Posted May 12, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 12, 2012 I've heard engine troubles but that's not supported by her speed through the Bay of Bicay. Been listening to Southampton VTS Radio and all the coms between VTS and Ventura have been normal.
tom_uk Posted May 12, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 12, 2012 Ventura is just passing Calshot at 11pm. I'm not aware that she missed any ports - I'm sure I saw the usual webcam images from her call in Lisbon on Thursday. And Southampton VTS has her arriving at 23:59 today, although that could be a recent update. Unusual but not sinister, I think. (If I was on board I'd be a bit disappointed, though - one of the few things I enjoy about that last morning is getting up early, going up on deck and watching the ship slip past Cowes, across the Solent and up Southampton water. In midsummer especially, the early-morning light and often very still water makes for a magical experience.)
MattyBarlow Posted May 12, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 12, 2012 There have been a few early arrivals into Soton this year.
tom_uk Posted May 12, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 12, 2012 I've just thought of something. Didn't Ventura start this cruise some hours late? - about 8:30 pm instead of 4:30? At the time it was thought to be due to the late running of a connecting train (though Oriana, also in port on the dame day, didn't wait), but later I think there was a report that it was due to a technical problem. If Ventura does have some issues then getting her back to Southampton early would give repair teams more time for replacement or repair. Update: here's a link to the other thread. item #15 talks (by Host Sharon) says that Ventura's departure was due to 'technical reasons'.

tartanexile81 Posted May 12, 2012 #9 Share Posted May 12, 2012 There was a 'live from Ventura' report on the P&O website which I've been following and one of the latest last posts said: "For you people who watch where ships are we will be in Southampton around Midnight --instead of morning --although no one will be allowed to get off !! Something needs doing to the engine !! Lets hope it is fixed for the next cruise!!" Hope that explains things!

tom_uk Posted May 13, 2012 #11 Share Posted May 13, 2012 Looks as if Ventura is away on time for her cruise to the fjords.
Thejuggler Posted May 13, 2012 #12 Share Posted May 13, 2012 Hope the passengers are wrapped up. Northerly winds, barely above freezing and possible snow showers in Norway next week!
tom_uk Posted May 15, 2012 #13 Share Posted May 15, 2012 Someone posted in another forum that the reason for the early arrival was to allow the engines time to cool down before they were worked on. Makes sense....

Not correct Tom, We waited for the train as we had time to reach our first port Malaga in good time. Oriana on the other hand had to leave to get to the first port. We must have been easily timed for the first leg as by the morning of the day of arrival we had reduced speed down to 18 knots. The impression I got, regarding the maintenance at the end of the cruise, was that this had been planned for some time as the final run home from Lisbon was not particularly fast.
