Poodlesnoot Posted May 6, 2005 #1 Share Posted May 6, 2005 I will be getting in to the Captain Cook Hotel at like 8pm having the night free in Anchorage. I am traveling with my folks and my wife...since it'll be a bit late, my parents would likely call it a night and leave my wife and I an opportunity to enjoy a nice night out. Any suggestions close by to the Captain Cook? Or if I have to pop in a cab, so be it. Maybe a late dinner?...great spot for nice cocktails and unique quality music? (not head thumpers rock...we're 51 & 43) Thanks
Budget Queen Posted May 6, 2005 #2 Share Posted May 6, 2005 The Glacier Brewhouse is a top dining choice for me.
Rare Coral Posted May 6, 2005 #3 Share Posted May 6, 2005 I second Glacier Brewhouse and it is within walking distance (less then 2 blocks) from Captain Cook.

tee_wrecks Posted May 6, 2005 #5 Share Posted May 6, 2005 Anyone have info on the Double Musky in Girdwood? I got some good info from friends that ate there but it was several years ago. How bout a current review?
AkSusan Posted May 9, 2005 #6 Share Posted May 9, 2005 It's still great. Though they still don't take reservations, so if you don't go early plan to wait and sometimes it can be a wait. It's not a very big place. Also you'd need a car to get there as it's about 35-45 minutes to Girdwood according to traffic. (not head thumpers rock...we're 51 & 43) Thanks I know the Glacier Brewhouse has been mentioned but it doesn't have music and can be a little noisy, right next door is their sister restaurant Ristorante Orso, a very good Northern Italian restaurant, though it doesn't have music either. Simon & Seaforts a couple blocks away is a very good restaurant though no music either. Rum Runners and Humpy's usually have music but consider those a bar type atmosphere. Right now off the top of my head the only other place I can think of that would have music downtown is http://www.berniesbungalowlounge.com/ Susan in Anchorage :)
Poodlesnoot Posted May 9, 2005 Author #8 Share Posted May 9, 2005 Thanks for the ideas....it just always reminds me of a trip in Scotland when my wife and I went out to a pub in Edinburgh and saw a small local 3 piece group...was so much fun, I'd like to repeat the happening in a new place. irismike Posted May 9, 2005 #10 Share Posted May 9, 2005 AK Susan: Any tips on sights to see without renting a car if we only have one day in Anchorage. We have to leave for the airport by 10:30 PM. Any hop on hop off tours? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any info about Clarion Suites, location, etc. Heard Glacier brewhouse is very good but isn't it a bit pricey? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We are doing Dawn Princess 5-16-05 tour. Thanks.
AkSusan Posted May 9, 2005 #11 Share Posted May 9, 2005 irismike, The Clarion is in a great location downtown and only a couple blocks from the museum - http://www.anchoragemuseum.org/ They have a very good cafe there. Here's a link to the Glacier Brewhouse - http://www.glacierbrewhouse.com/home.htm, so you can go and check out the prices. In my opinion for Anchorage it's a mid priced restaurant. Here's another place that might interest you - Humpy's http://www.humpys.com/ I see they have their menus on line but not their prices, but they post their menu outside the restaurant. For lower prices but it would be fast food the 5th Avenue Mall which you are only about 3 blocks from has a food court on their top floor. Also the Alaska Native Heritage Center is very nice and they are running a complimentary shuttle - http://www.alaskanative.net/364.asp Susan in Anchorage :)
Rare northwoods2 Posted May 9, 2005 #12 Share Posted May 9, 2005 We are also looking for a nice place for dinner in Anchorage to celebrate my husband's birthday on June 9th. Price doesn't matter.
AkSusan Posted May 9, 2005 #13 Share Posted May 9, 2005 We are also looking for a nice place for dinner in Anchorage to celebrate my husband's birthday on June 9th. Price doesn't matter. What type of cuisine do you want? Susan in Anchorage :)
Rare northwoods2 Posted May 9, 2005 #14 Share Posted May 9, 2005 We would love good seafood. Otherwise just about anything. We love Thai food also.
AkSusan Posted May 9, 2005 #15 Share Posted May 9, 2005 No Thai downtown but a lot of places have excellent seafood. The places that I would go for a very nice birthday dinner are the following and of course there are plenty of others as I have listed previously. All of them always have either halibut and/or salmon, shrimp, sometimes king crab legs in various forms on their menus. Simon & Seaforts http://www.r-u-i.com/sim/ Orso http://www.orsoalaska.com/index.html Top of the World in the Hilton The Crow's Nest at the Captain Cook http://www.captaincook.com/restaurants.php Those are just a few selections and you can go check out http://www.anchorage.net which is our Visitor's guide which will have more for you to browse. Rare northwoods2 Posted May 9, 2005 #16 Share Posted May 9, 2005 Thank you for the suggestions Susan. Do you recommend reservations? And if so do they take them 2-3 weeks in advance?
AkSusan Posted May 9, 2005 #17 Share Posted May 9, 2005 Yes I would recommend reservations and they usually book 2 to 3 weeks in advance, so that's no problem and then you would have a chance at getting the times that you want. Once all of you start hitting town, we even know to make reservations further out :D Susan :)
lmcd Posted May 9, 2005 #18 Share Posted May 9, 2005 Noticed that you mentioned doing a local pub while in Scotland. Will be doing the Bonnie Scotland tour with Globus Tour Company in Aug. Picked Aug because the Military Tattoo is included with the tour. Have 2 days in Edinburgh. What local pub did you vist. Other suggestions? We have enjoyed visiting Marx Bros restaurant in Anchorage. The Caesar Salad done tableside is terrific. Small place requires reservations. Sack(sp?) is also terrific. Larry
AkSusan Posted May 9, 2005 #19 Share Posted May 9, 2005 Sacks is nice but small and be warned if you make a reservation with Marx Brothers (which is a very nice place but again small) they will take a credit card number and if you don't show up they are going to charge you a certain amount for not showing. CheshireCat Posted May 9, 2005 #20 Share Posted May 9, 2005 After dinner - the Fly By Night Club and the Whale Fat Follies - unique Alaskan experience! My husband and I lived in Anchorage from 1971 to 1973. Way back then, a band called "Whale Fat Follies" played regularly at Chilkoot Charlies (which was a small log cabin, peanut shells on the floor dive) Could this possibly be the same group? Believe it or not, we have their album on vinyl (now I'm really dating myself) It is called "Art is Whatever You Can Get Away With" on the "Oosik Music" label (as former Alaskans we still remember oosiks....) and includes such "hits" as "She's a Weiner" and "Milkman Strut"
AkSusan Posted May 9, 2005 #21 Share Posted May 9, 2005 The Whale Fat Follies are performed by Mr. Whitekeys of the Fly by Night Club. In the 70s the Fly by Night was on Lake Spenard, it's now located in Spenard. Here's a link to it now - http://www.flybynightclub.com/shows_wff.html Susan in Anchorage :) P.S. had a friend that had knives made in Moose Pass and one of their handles is made from an oosik :D
