Underage Drinking

Not only is the consumption of alcohol below the age of 18 years illegal, but the supply of alcohol to someone under 18 years is also illegal. Therefore the parents would also be breaking the law.

Not if they are your children. In Colorado the law, which nobody seems to follow, says that parents can order a drink for their underaged children as young as perhaps 16? even in restaurants. And in Europe- very different. As in most places in S. America and Mexico. So your blanket statement is true in a very few places worldwide, and attended to in probably even fewer.

I am appalled at how many people on this board supported underage kids drinking or any "adult" giving underage kids drinks. It sickens me.

????

Did I miss something? I didn't see anyone supporting underage drinking, just explanations of the different rules for different ages in various places.

Before we can determine whether we should be bothered by your post, we need to know what your definition of 'underage' for drinking is?

Has anyone thought that a 14 year old girl, perhaps unused to drinking, is vulnerable to suggestions that could end her up in a great deal of trouble?

That was my main concern. i'm always a bit wary when I see older lads plying youngsters with alcohol.

Dealt with how? Can you share the details?

I'm sure you'll be aware of the Data Protection Act whereby this information would be confidential. If NCL tell me it's been dealt with, I'll take their word for it.

One thing I would remind anyone of though is, these ships have CCTV all over them, especially in bar areas, so with the details of times and dates, I'm sure a quick look at the recordings would verify things, enabling NCL to deal with the matter.

Since my statement was in support of a cruise in the Mediterranean (see OP ;)) it was 100% correct.

Whoa! Where have I said this, or even hinted that I disagree with anyone's cultural values? Infact, I have made it clear that I DON'T blame the kids, and I drank underage myself.

I look forward to your examples of me questioning peoples' cultural values.

However, I won't hold my breath as I await your reply.

I'm not looking for any specific, private information/data. No names need to be used, no personal information, especially regarding the people you cited in your original post. I'm looking for specifics about how NCL will address this situation in the future - e.g., change in corporate policy or protocol. I don't see that the Data Protection Act covers this.

In re-reading your reply, it appears that NCL didn't really give you any specifics, just that they have dealt with it and you're taking their word for it. If that's the case, we will all just have to wait and see how it's handled differently, if at all.

I'm sure there will be plenty CC members taking NCL cruises soon. They may post if they see this kind of incident repeating. I'll be back on the Epic next year myself.

Other than that, there's not much one can do other than take their word for it.

As I've said before, my aim is to prevent a kid having a potentially serious issue. Not to have someone disciplined for "turning a blind eye", even if deserved.

Dude....take a chill pill. That poster was replying to GrandmaHoffman, not to you.

But for whatever it's worth, I've never heard of the Data Protection Act.

So you're saying that it was okay for NCL to tell you details, but not for you to share them?

OR, are you saying that their response to you was "don't worry, we took care of it"?

I'm certain that NCL told him whatever they figured he wanted to hear. Which is amazing, because I cannot fathom his problem.

I made the OP so it was aimed at me as well.

Companies can't inform complainants the nature of any actions taken. Have you ever had, or heard of anyone who has had, a letter informing you that Mr X has been sacked or Mrs Y has received a Verbal warning? Probably not as it doesn't happen.

I'm afraid I'll just have to take their word for it. No problems with that at all. I'm sure if they don't enforce their own policies, people will be quick to let the world know. Especially when it comes to the health and safety of kids.

Are you seriously saying that you think its ok for NCL officers to stand and watch minors drinking alcohol, which is in breach of the onboard policies which they themselves introduced?

As for giving the reply they thought I'd be happy with, sorry, that doesn't normally work in the real world of tourism (I worked with one of Europes largest tour operators for a number of years) as people often do return to resorts, ships, etc. I'm going with NCL again next year as I'm happy they've took on board my comments ;) and I also have a friend going on Epic next month. Like I said. I'm happy with their response and glad they are taking the safety of kids at sea seriously.

  • 1 year later...
A couple years ago my sister (15 at the time) was sitting with my dad and his friend. My dad ordered a bucket of beer and the waitress offered one of them to my sister.

Do you realize you livened a two year old thread??

Beware of the Zombie thread:rolleyes:

Really, it makes no sense to me with all the new technology available why threads cannot be made "read only" after a certain period.

Sure, allow CC members to continue reading them, but why allow them to be opened when so often the information is dated and/or irrelevant.

Sorry, but I've been caught by this myself and it's irritating. :o

Oh and there I go again.............off topic...I should just report myself, save everyone else the trouble.

Who knows, maybe because some two year old threads could still have relevant information or maybe the OP and others still use CC and want to update the post 2 years later. I'm just trying to figure out how the person who brought the thread back found it. Being 2 years old they either really had to dig, or use the search function...

So how old did your sister look? My cousin is 21 now but he has been taller and as well built as I am for the last 3 years. Before he was 21 when we went out to watch a game at sports bar and I ordered a pitcher the waiter would routinely bring him a beer glass assuming a 31-34 year old wouldn't purchase a pitcher to themselves. My cousin didn't drink before he was 21 so he would tell them he wasn't 21 and they would take the glass away. Heck on his 21st birthday I took him to 3 places to drink, a casino, and a strip club, the only place that carded him was the casino and it was a last minute decision by the doorman!
