Sauer-kraut Posted July 24, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 24, 2012 You can walk Dover on your own, go up to the Castle and there are footpaths that will take you along the cliffs. Its not really that big a town.

I think you may have a flawed vision of Dover. This is no quaint port with fishing boats bobbing around but is dominated by the large commercial ferries of which there are several each hour and heavy lorries going to and from France from Dover. There is a small operation down in the marina that do trips to see the cliffs but you will see little more than from your ship.
gaelsail Posted July 24, 2012 #4 Share Posted July 24, 2012 I was in Dover for a few days and really enjoyed it although I can't comment on the sea safari. The town centre itself is nice and there were people playing on the beach (it was very warm). A visit to the castle took most of a day and there were several other places that we visited. By the end of the week we hadn't managed to visit everywhere we wanted to see. Check out: http://www.whitecliffscountry.org.uk/visit_dover.aspx and also Kent Greeters: http://www.visitkent.co.uk/greeters/ who act as excellent guides. It didn't feel like a large port except when we were sitting on the seafront watching the ferries or at the castle looking down on the traffic far below. Giantfan13 Posted July 26, 2012 #5 Share Posted July 26, 2012 We sailed out of Dover and got a pretty good look at the Cliffs. We also thought about doing a private sail, but others on this site also said it might not be as you expected. We did get a grand look at the Cliffs from our sail away. here are a few pix and a video to help you decide. http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe189.jpg http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe194.jpg http://s834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/?action=view¤t=europemaster198.mp4 Cheers Len
Rare insidecabin Posted July 26, 2012 #6 Share Posted July 26, 2012 Depending on schedule and transport plans there are other options that are potential better than using Dover for the precruise. Canterbury is worth considering http://www.canterbury.co.uk/ Cliffs from the ship should be fine, for the fishing village/town then there are a few around the kent coast not sure of the nearest/best to visit precruise. rosey1946 Posted August 10, 2012 #8 Share Posted August 10, 2012 Sailed out of Dover two years ago and stayed at the Ramada Inn. Had a major theft occur and the hotel did nothing to help us recover the theft. We later found out from the police that the hotel has no security. Just beware. There are so many other places to stay. Avoid the Ramada. Linda
Bruin Steve Posted August 10, 2012 #9 Share Posted August 10, 2012 I know the OP is fairly wheel set in her plans... But for anyone else reading this thread, I'll throw in my two cents... We've cruised out of Dover before and have been fairly unimpressed, so, last cruise out of Dover, we, instead, did a four-night pre-cruise in Canterbury...absolutely loved it...and it's only about a half an hour from Dover...well worth considering for anyone cruising out of Dover... Rare John Bull Posted November 6, 2012 #11 Share Posted November 6, 2012 How expensive is a taxi from Canterbury to the terminal? Its about 18 miles/30 minutes, right on the dividing line for choosing to pre-book or simply take a cab from the rank. At a guess, the fare for a cab will be around £35, pre-booked such as http://www.folkestonetaxi.com/ mebbe £25 The train (plus cab between Dover station & terminal) is another option JB :)
