Tropical Storm Ernesto

We, too, will be on the Freedom Sunday. Depending on the track and speed of the storm...maybe flip flop Grand Cayman and Jamaica? Just wondering...

We had that happen on one of our cruises. Got a letter at checkin that our itinerary flip flopped. Worked out fine.

I just dont see anyway we head towards the western ports...the storm is expected to be in that area starting Monday..and when you take into account the maps are just showing the center the bands are going to be hitting the entire GC, Jamaica, and Cozumel areas.....I would bet its going to have to be a Eastern tour unless this thing really changes direction.

Wonder when Carnival will make the decision with the Dream heading there Sat.?

I'm sailing out on the Legend on Sunday. My first cruise. I'm watching this storm closely and it will be interesting to see what happens.

I hope you have a good time even if you don't get to each port. Might be a bumpy ride! It's fun trying to walk down the hall and not look drunk when the ship is really swaying.

You might want to take some bonine.

I'll bet the Captain's are busy with this news.

We leave on Freedom Sunday. The ship's itinerary would have us sailing head-on into Ernesto Tuesday. When do you think they would tell you of modification to trip.

A bad day at sea is better then a good day at work!!

I called yesterday and all they said was they will do the best to keep us out of storm and we wouldn't know if we have port changes until we get on boat.

I will be on Freedom too. I called and they said we won't know til we get on ship but yeah it would make sense to do Jamaica after Key West then Grand Cayman cause then we will be behind the storm. Or they will bring us to someplace east. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Any thoughts about where the Paradise 5 night will end up? We leave Tampa on Monday 8/6 headed to Grand Cayman (wed) and Cozumel (Thurs). I purposefully selected the Tampa departure for a short cruise, as I didn't want to go to the Bahamas and Key West. Being a 5 nighter coming from Tampa.. where could they divert to?

Well I would think you would get diverted east or maybe they will flip flop the ports. Not sure and you probably won't know til you get on :(

Lol! We had that happen on our second cruise from the west coast. Hurricane was headed north, so the captain hugged the coast down toward Puerto Vallarta. Stabilizer broke so between that and the rough seas by the second night the MDR was empty and you could watch the dishes slide side to side on the table. Walking was a hoot for those of us still up and about.

I am on the same cruise as you. I called them a few days ago and they said if there was an itinerary change, they could do an automated call out to people Sat. or Sun. If they don't call Sunday, I'll be calling them to get an update.

Today's update:

http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=2170

Ernesto's survival into today means that the storm now potentially poses a formidable threat to the Western Caribbean. Wind shear is expected to drop to the low range, 5 - 10 knots, later today, and remain low for the next five days, according to the 8 am EDT run of the SHIPS model. With the storm entering a moister environment with increasing heat energy in the ocean, the official NHC forecast of Ernesto reaching hurricane strength by early Monday morning near Jamaica is a reasonable one. The reliable computer models predict a west to west-northwest motion through the Caribbean, with the storm's heavy rains staying south of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The more southerly path predicted by the usually reliable ECMWF model, which brings Ernesto to a landfall in Belize on Wednesday, is being weighted less heavily by NHC, since they are assuming Ernesto will stay stronger than the ECMWF model is forecasting. Once Ernesto enters the Central Caribbean on Sunday, the storm's outer spiral bands will likely cause flooding problems in Southwest Haiti, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands. Of the major dynamical models NHC uses operationally--the ECMWF, GFS, NOGAPS, UKMET, GFDL, and HWRF--none clearly show Ernesto reaching hurricane strength in the Caribbean. However, some of the best statistical models, such as the LGEM and SHIPS, do show Ernesto becoming a hurricane in the Caribbean. By Monday, a trough of low pressure passing to the storm's north may be capable of turning Ernesto more to the northwest, resulting in the storm entering the Gulf of Mexico by the middle of next week.

I am on the Liberty on 8/11/12 going to Cozumel, Belize, Roatan, and Grand Cayman. Do you think this will pass by then?

You have to forgive me. I know nothing about these kinds of storms. I have traveled a lot but haven't encountered much bad weather. All of our storms here in Alaska consist of snow and rain. Not really a big deal.

It should pass by the 10th as it shows on map unless it slows up. But I think you should be safe from Ernesto unless another storm forms. Hopefully you will be in the clear.

Thanks. So what is it like on the ship if it rains? I just can't imagine.

Eat more food lol :D I can't remember really when I had a rainy day but my whole cruise on Freedom is looking rainy now...should be interesting a day or two of sun would be nice.

The low-pressure area that is currently off the African coast now has a 50% chance of developing into a Tropical Storm.

Maggie

That one is probably a couple weeks away and so far the projected path takes it up the eastern coast. Welcome to hurricane season.

I hope it goes away! Sailing out of Baltimore on 8/26...last year at that time Hurricane Irene hit, we were out of power, and I had to chop up a tree that fell in my driveway...I'd rather forget that experience altogether!

You will have to keep an eye on that new one. Hope all turns out well.
