Ajaccio, Corsica - WHAT TO DO???

I can't find much info on Ajaccio, Corsica. Has anyone been there/done that on their own? Ship's tour (1 !?!) sounds pitiful and is likely to be crowded. Please help if you've been there... thanks.

Been there (twice) and actually enjoyed just turning it into a beach day since there is a pretty nice sandy beach located right in town (would be towards your left as you walk into the heart of town. There are quite a few nice cafes across the street from the beach which works well for lunch. Otherwise you are either going to need to take an excursion or rent a car. One tour we have enjoyed goes to the Calanches (interesting rock formations) because you get a nice long ride across the island and there are some beautiful views.

There is an old French fort that you can climb up and get a nice view of the town. There are also several museums plus a nice street with shops. Definitely a laid back stop.

Loved wandering around the town and the marina in Ajaccio. We also hopped on the Petit Train for a ride up to the Napolean Bonaparte Monument.

We too enjoyed the road train up to see Napoleon and then out along the coast road for some distance to see the offshore islands. There is also a tourist bus which doea a similar route. Both depart from the main square, quite near the ship.
