Ideas for Turnaround Days at Red Hook

Desert Cruisers

Recommended Posts

We are doing B2B2B cruises out of Red Hook/Brooklyn this Fall. We have sailed into Red Hook before but have always headed straight to the airport. On this Fall trip, we will have 2 turnaround days ( Saturday and Wednesday). On both days, the ship is there all day (7:15 am - 5:00 pm).

We will be spending time in Manhattan prior to the cruise. This will not be our first time in the City. In fact, I grew up in northern Jersey. We would still be open to going into Manhattan but would also be open to hanging out in Brooklyn.

What are our transportation options to/from Manhattan and around Brooklyn? Since we will not have bags with us and we don't have any physical issues, is public transit feasible? What things might we do in Brooklyn?

Thx for all info.

There's no mass transit that takes you directly to/from the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. To get anywhere you have to walk from the terminal to a bus stop blocks away, and then take the bus to a subway station.

Off hand I can't think of anything of interest in the immediate...my personal choice would be to head into Manhattan.

Here are the mass transit options to get there taken from the port's web site, but please note that the Smith 9th St. station is currently closed for renovation:

By Subway

Take the F train to Smith/9th Street Train station and change for the B77 Bus. Get off bus at Conover Street and Dikeman Street. The walk is then approximately 6 long blocks to the terminal entrance.

Take 2/3/4/5/N/R subway train to Borough Hall and change for B61 bus which is on Atlantic Avenue (at Court Street). You must walk four (4) blocks southof the train station to access the bus stop. Get off bus at Pioneer Street and Van Brunt Street. The walk is then approximately 4 long blocks to the terminal entrance at Pioneer and Conover streets.

In Brooklyn you could go to Brooklyn Bridge Park which is fairly close by and has gorgeous views; Prospect Park, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Garden (all 3 are in the same area of Grand Army Plaza). If you are so inclined you could ride the "fabulous F train" to Coney Island and stroll the boardwalk. In Red Hook you have the huge supermarket, Fairway which has a cafe overlooking the harbor and Ikea is there too.

You can get directions to anywhere using the google map tool (for bus directions too).

Your closet subway stop is at Carroll St & Smith St (F train) and you can take that into Manhattan or go in the opposite direction to Coney Island.

Here are directions to Brookln Bridge Park:

Hope the link comes thru.

Have a great trip!

The MTA website states that the Smith-9th station is closed until "Fall 2012". Is the Smith-Carroll Street station a different station?

Thx for all info.

Yes--it's a different station--it's the one before (or after, depending on which direction you are going) Smith-9th St station.
