Social Hostess/Reception Staff on Cruises

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can anyone out there help me out, I am struggling to find out who the recruitment company would be for Staff positions on Thomson Cruise ships. I would appreciate any help if possible in relation to Hostess/Reception jobs. I have tried PEEL who I know provide a lot of the entertainment vacancies but sadly not the Hostess, I have also tried contacting TUI but they passed me back to PEEL. Maybe Darren's mum (off Celebration may be able to check with him? :)).

Many many thanks Lynne

Hi Lynne i will certainly ask Darren though i'm not sure he will know. I believe a lot of the work is contracted out, e.g the hairdressers is through a group that i have never heard of. As i said i will ask him, don't hear from him very often though:)

I beleive the social hostesses are employed by PEEL, only the destination services employees are actually employed by Thomson/TUI they are nearly all ex Thomson Reps, I think the rest of the hotel side of the crew are employed by Apollo Group which is an agency based in Miami but I cant be sure on this because I have a feeling it changed a few years ago? could try them anyway

Lucy, who is the current Social Hostess on Celebration, was telling us that she was an overseas rep for Thomson prior to taking up her newposition this year - I got the impression that she is employed by Thomson but I may be wrong

The lady we met on Majesty also had been a Thomson holiday rep having spent a lot of years in resort. We have also met a social hostess who was an ex- NNEB Nursery Nurse - I think they are Thomson employees and would be very surprised if they had anything to do with Peel which is the entertainment agency.

Thanks so much gizzie4. Darren's swing session was amazing by the way! Loved it.

Not certain but think employed by Louis Lines my niece did that job till Jan and they where her employers.

that would depend on the ship. The social hostess usually has another job as the welfare officer. Alaire on destiny last year had three jobs. welfare officer, social hostess and future cruises salesperson. I think they are 'crew' rather than entertainemnt and the welfare role suggests they are similar to a holiday 'rep'.

Its very very difficult to get onto the hotel side of cruise ships crew (reception, back room staff, waiters, pantrymen, housekeeping etc) these crew are provided by ships chandlers and agencies usually based in the US they actively recruit in various major ports/cities around the world Mumbai/Manilla etc they don’t recruit in Western Europe or the US unless they are recruiting Skilled Bridge Officers/Engineers/PA's these are usually employed by the cruise companies or the owners of the ship, (Carnival run a cadetship program based in Eastleigh nr Southampton and BTEC Marine engineering programmes at South Tyneside College) Entertainment staff/Hosts/technicians are usually employed by theatrical agencies, other stand alone companies provide their own staff to run their concessions such as ship board shops, photographers, The casino & Spa

Use Caution there are many agencies advertising cruise ships jobs on the internet....if they ask for an upfront payment of any kind....back slowly away! No bona fide agency will ever ask for a payment up front

Brian Bruns wrote a very entertaining book chronicling his time as (the only American) waiter on Carnival cruise ships, called 'A Hit Below The Waterline' A real Eye Opener!

Hi all,

Hope you do t mind me bringing this thread back to now... I've always enjoyed reading the threads for the regular posters and thought you may like to have an update from the advice I received.

I joined Thomson as a rep overseas and I can't believe just 2 years on from this post I will be joining the Celebration as the Social Hostess in just less than 2 weeks. So thank you all for the advice, dreams can come true. I'm sure I will get to meet some of you in person in the near and distant future. x

Congratulations! What a lovely end (or new start) to your original post. :) Thank you so much for letting us know - I do appreciate it when someone takes time to thank others for their support and help.

Well, it's all worked out really well for you and I'm so pleased to hear that you will soon be realising your dreams. The very best of luck - and hopefully we'll see you on board sometime. :) I'll definitely come to say 'Hello' if so. Enjoy and the very best of luck with your new job - a season in the Caribbean - Wow!!!!! Doesn't get much better! ;);)

That's great news for you.

My daughter has just returned home and back to Thomson shops after doing 3 years on all the ships except Thomson Majesty, doing future cruise advisor, shore excursions and the last 18 months as Social Welfare Hostess on the Dream.

Hope you enjoy the work

Thank you everyone for you lovely comments, it's very kind.

Pressy it would be lovely to chat to your daughter if she is willing as I'm finding it hard to speak to someone who is currently doing the job to find out a little bit more about what would be good to pack, especially for the special occasions such as Christmas Day and weddings or blessing. :):)
