Castro, chile

For those who have been to Castro, is the old church close enough to the port to walk to? Is it open for tours ( and how does one get tickets?). Is the handcraft market close enough to walk to? Did these areas seem safe for one or two ladies?

I assume you mean Castro on Chiloe island. You can see the church from the port. It is a straight, steep street to get there. (About 6 blocks?) We did walk it, but we are good walkers. You can just walk into the church and look around. Look at the models of other historical churches around the island. No tickets are required. Be respectful and mindful that there may be services going on.

The town is perfectly safe.

There are regular taxis and cars that look like taxis, but operate on a fixed bus-like route. We hired a regular taxi at the park in front of the church to take us to several places out of town. Very reasonable. If your Spanish is not good, make a list of the places you would like to visit and show it to the driver to get a price. Also write down the time you must return like this: "Regreso al puerto X:XX pm" ("Return to the port at x:xx") You will tender in, but there is a pier for the tenders and local boats.

The islands of Chiloe have some wonderful churches as well so if you have time rent a car and take some of the ferries to the remote villages. Make sure you try a bowl of Curanto..I took pictures of about 50 very unusual and beautiful churches during our 5 day adventure. If you are there only for a day Castro is a cute town to walk around and we found some nice places to eat right on the main plaza.

If you cannot drive around Chiloe, the church in Castro has scale models of all the main churches on the island. They are placed along the side aisles of the church. Really interesting.
