Based on location and various reviews, next February we're staying post cruise @ The Darling Hotel. Location seems to be quite desirable.

Out of 193 reviews from travelers who posted on TripAdvisor, 90% rated the hotel excellent or very good. The Darling also reveived a very positive

memtion by Conde Nast Traveller. Hopfully, we'll agree as well.

Stay well,

This hotel is nowhere near the cruise terminal at Circular Quay (Overseas Passenger Terminal - OPT). It is the new name for the hotel complex at Sydney's Casino (The Star) at Pyrmont on the other side of Darling Harbour. Ok location if post cruise or cruising from the new White Bay terminal.

I am hoping that someone can help me narrow down some hotel choices given to me by my TA. I am spending two nights in Sydney pre-cruise in November.

Here are my options (ranging from $626 up to $730 for two nights):

The Four Seasons (actually the cheapest!)

The Radisson Blu

Sydney Marriott (I believe at Circular Quay)

The Four Points Darling Harbour

The Holiday Inn Old Sydney

It seems as though all hotels are on the pricey side -- especially to be in a good location which is important to me. So which of these would provide the best accommodation for the price and location?

Thank you so much for any advice!

These hotels are all International standard and in good locations with the Holiday Inn Old Sydney being the most popular moderate price hotel for pre-cruise - just minutes from the terminal. You should be able to get prices around $230 with on-line booking sites.

Four Seasons is also very handy to Terminal but is more up market and prices around $315 for deluxe city views.

Sydney HArbour Marriott also handy at the beginning of Pitt St opposite the terminal (pointy end of ship if bow is facing city) with similar pricing to 4 Seasons.

Raddisson Blu is a couple blocks up from the Marriott and should be about $350.

4-Points is handy to downtown, Aquarium, Darling Hbr etc but bit pricey for water view rooms.

I would also consider the Harbour Rocks Hotel - 2 minutes walk from terminal at around $270 per room.

All prices including taxes.

I think your TA might be quoting you the rack rates. You can do a lot better by shopping around.

Thank you to everyone for their advice!!

This must be an expensive weekend. I looked at the hotels suggested and they are all in the same ballpark as those quoted by my TA. And I did my own research and comparisons on various websites and they are in line with her quotes. I did find a slightly cheaper rate on the Marriott website for the Marriott Harbor Circular Quay using a AAA discount.

So, I guess I am now leaning towards either the Marriott and the Four Seasons.

Hi, We are sailing on Celebrity Solstice on 4 Novembe 2013 and staying at a very reasonably priced (but small) hotel in city, short walk from Darling Harbour and Chinatown. Was fully refurbished over 12 months ago and is Singapore owned. We paid $129 overnight for a Queen sized room. Probably classed as 3-4*. Short taxi trip to either cruise terminal. Check out their website http://www.cityhotelsydney.com.au/. Very good reviews on TripAdvisor too. When you go on their website hit the Online Booking button and it will show the very special rates. Of course at this price you do not have "views" but is a very central hotel for checking out the city CBD. (5 minutes walk).

PaulaW, There is no way i would pay the prices you have been quoted. I would wait a couple more months and see what the online sites come up with. Try also the Rendezvous Hotel at The Rocks and Sheraton on the Park in downtown Sydney.

Thank you once again everyone!

I appreciate all of the advice. And CCC's, thanks for the tip on City Hotel. I did check it out and they certainly have great rates, but I'm not sure it's what I'm looking for. We are on the same cruise, by the way! Have you visited our Roll Call? It has been getting more active. Hope to meet you onboard!

Hi PaulaW, I am sure you will find just the right accommodation for your needs in Sydney as there are plenty of options for everyone to choose from. Have also visited the Roll Call for our trip on 4 November and it is definitely possible we may meet on board. Enjoy your trip to OZ and our neighbour over the ditch, N.Z.

Hate to burst your bubble,

but that weekend in Sydney is often quite expensive (all Saturday nights are, some moreso)

It's the open house weekend for the Historic Houses trust and the Sydney to Gong ride is on.

It is also the middle of formal season and beginning of end of year work parties so you end up with overnighters after the various events.

Don't leave it too late or you will find rooms will be $600pn near the quay!

Have a look also at Shangri La (just behind the four seasons) as they sometimes have good packages.

Not luxury like the FS but also a nice property, a bit away from the Quay tho, is Meriton Campbell Serviced Apartments. (This is if budget is the most important).

Of Marriott and FS, I'd be going FS..

Thanks for the info!! I knew there had to be some reason why the rates were so high!

I will definitely choose something soon and I do appreciate your input. :)

Can't believe that the Four Seasons is actually the cheapest - I'd definitely grab that!!!!

We've stayed in The Four Seasons, The Four Points and The Holiday Inn Old Sydney (although Holiday Inn was years ago and was under the banner of Park Royal at that time).

Each of those three hotels were great in all respects although The Four Seasons was just a cut above. We had a suite on the top floor overlooking the cruise terminal when the the two Queens (Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth) were in and it was just sensational. This was a special occasion for us as we are not usually so extravagant.

For location I'd go The Rocks over Darling Harbour....and I really like the location of The Holiday Inn best of all. From the roof pool the view is fantastic and when you walk out of the hotel you are already in the midst of everything. Especially on weekends when the Rocks Markets are happening. Fabulous.

Amazingly, the Four Seasons is the cheapest and the Holiday Inn the most expensive. Who would have thought? I did discover that I can cash in some credit card points for Marriott certificates, so that might be the way to go. But, the Four Seasons is tempting!

Does anyone have any experience with The York in Circular Quay! It has reasonable prices with laundry in the rooms and the reviews were good...but I can always use advice!

The only York Hotel I know is at the top of York St, Sydney but that is not at Circular Quay. They are serviced apartments. Is this the one you are referring to?

It is located at 5 York Street. It says it's 1km south/west of Circular Quay.

That's the one. Good location. Quiet at night. A little busy week days in York St as it on the major suburban bus route into the city that comes off the Harbour Bridge. Underground rail (Wynyard Station) 2 minutes away.

There are a number of office block cafe's nearby for breakfast/lunch/coffee at reasonable prices.

Easy walk to downtown area. Just follow York St (same direction as traffic flow - it is a one way street) to either King or Market St where you can walk down to George St and Pitt St Mall to the major shops such as Meyer or David Jones. The end of York St runs right alongside the famous and beautiful Queen Victoria Building (QVB) - a must see visit. At the very end of York St is our Town Hall (City Hall). You can actually see it from the front of The York about 0.5 mile.

If you want to venture to the Darling Harbour area on the way then walk down York St 2 short blocks and turn right into Erskine St and follow all the way downhill to the King St Wharf precinct with its myriad of restaurants, harbour cruises etc and then you can walk along the waterfront to the Sydney Aquarium and beyond. Return via the Market St overpass to York St/QVB area. Nice walk with refreshments along the way:)

To the ship is also an easy walk 150 yds down hill either via Lang St/Grosvenor St, or Jamison St or Margaret St to George St. Turn left on George and flat 10 minute walk with bags to Alfred St - cross here into Circular Quay docks and you should be looking at the bow of the ship at the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Look up Google Maps. Be careful crossing the streets (use pedestrian crossings) as traffic will be coming from the opposite direction that you are accustomed to:eek: and will be busy early mornings and evenings.

If you have to drag 2 bags each then maybe consider a taxi but it really is an easy walk. We always arrive by train at Wynyard and just walk.

Its been a number of eyars since my stay but I enjoyed my week at The Russell Hotel in the Rocks. It is directly across the street from the cruise terminal and the ferries, only a very short walk to either the Opera House or bridge. Fantastic locaton and cheap at the time, very nice if you're looking for something a bit different with a lot of charm

@cassamanda thank you very much for the information!! We have been to Sydney twice but it's been years! My husband loves it there. I know we will take the ferry over to Manly Beach and I think I want to see the zoo this time.I'm glad to know that everything is within walking distance.Do you know of a self serve laundry near the cruise ship terminal? The cruise we are taking doesn't have self service laundry and we are on a back to back so I'd love to do laundry on our day back in Sydney!Thank you again for the directions!

Thanks for the info on The York. I am booked 2 days pre cruise in a standred studio. However when I emailed the hotel they tell me a standred studio has not been refurbished and a Delux Studio has. We will be there Jan.18, 2014. Should I rebook a delux Sudio?
