Hobby Airport to Galveston...how long a drive??

Hi Ciship,

In December we flew into Hobby and went to Galveston. We were unable to find a shuttle so we booked one of the transportation services. They picked us up from the airport and took us to the hotel. It was $20.00 per person. While it is 25-30 miles away (I think), it took at least 45 minutes due to traffic. We arrived around 4 which was probably commute time, so factor that in. You could check into renting a car, see if it works out cheaper than using one of the transportation services.

Good luck!

This is the shuttle service for both Hobby and Bush. Dcintheam you got a good deal at $20 per person. Bush is in North Houston and can be 1 to 11/2 hr or longer, from the island, depending on traffic. A lot are renting from Enterprise, dropping off one and picking up another when they return. If you have a large family or group renting a van from them might be the way to go. Hertz is moving into Galveston as well, but, I don't know their target date.

Enterprise and Hertz do one-way rentals from IAH and Hobby. You must call the Enterprise office in Galveston rather than the national toll-free number to reserve a vehicle, though - not sure about Hertz. You drop the vehicle off at their lot and take a shuttle to the pier. During peak boarding times (from about 11:30 to around 2:00) be patient as the shuttle may have to make several trips to get everyone to the pier. If you're thinking about taking a shuttle, make sure you understand the vehicle the companies use - some companies advertise themselves as a limosine service but are really vans. Hope this helps!

You can now book a one way rental with Hertz online. It's pretty expensive. (more so Hou to Gal; Gal to Hou was about 30% less). It lists the address for Galveston Hertz at -- 6115 Ave L Suite 100-- does anyone know how far this is from the cruise ship terminal?

Google has a great map system (http://maps.google.com/). The cruise ship piers are as follows:

Terminal No. 1 - Pier 23/26 --Carnival and some RCL --located at Harborside Dr between 23rd and 26th St.

Terminal No. 2 -- Princess, Celebrity, and some RCL ---located at Harborside and streets 27th and 28th.

The car rental at 6115 Ave L is on close to where I-45 meets the island. Check the map.

FYI, The Galveston Limosine Service is not a limo. It's a van that makes frequent stops to pick up other riders. Other services would be more direct.

Travel time from Hobby Airport is about 35 -45 minutes depending on beach traffic. Travel time from Bush Airport (IAH, north of Houston) is 1 1/2 hrs to more than 2 hrs if you hit rush hour (4:00 - 6:00).
