Rare FlyingScotSailors Posted January 21, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 21, 2013 Our Transatlantic cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam leaves on April 30. A Dutch couple on our roll call said April 30th is Queen's Day in the Netherlands and is the official birthday of Queen Beatrix. They asked whether and how this is celebrated on board HAL ships. The forum search function has gone missing again. Does anyone know the answer to this question? Thanks.

Yes it is, we had it last year on Zuiderdam, usually guests from Holland get invited to a toast reception with the captain. On zuiderdam the entrance of the MDR was decorated with flags and balloons. On zuiderdam the entrance of the MDR was decorated with flags and balloons. Main words here are "from Holland" - only the Dutch are invited to join the Captain for the toast. On one of my HAL cruises they asked passengers to wear orange.:)
luv2cruisenz Posted January 21, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 21, 2013 My DH travels on a Dutch passport but hasn't lived there for over 50 years, and on the last 2 cruises he started getting invitations in Dutch to special functions and got sent some nice food treats as well, all only addressed to him though! We always have a laugh about it, how he gets special treatment.
CoronaCRZR Posted January 22, 2013 #5 Share Posted January 22, 2013 Just to be correct, April 30 is actually NOT Queen Beatrix's birthday, but it is the Birthday of her Mother (Queen Juliana). Beatrix has her Birthday on Jan 31, but since it normally is too cold to celebrate for any outside celebrations, when she became queen they kept the celebration on April 30, the birthday of her mother. You bet it is!:) Onboard, HAL celebrates the national holidays of the Netherlands, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Indonesia, the Philippines and India. Each celebration is different and accorded all respect. Celebrations like Indonesian and Filipino Independence Day are a big thing for the crew and are celebrated with official flag rasing ceremonies attended by upper management and various other crew!
