rosinryanz Posted June 8, 2005 #1 Share Posted June 8, 2005 Has anyone here every visited Haiti via cruise, including the ports of Port au Prince or Cap Haiten . If so, I'd like to get your feedback on those ports. What did you like? What did you dislike? Would you want to return. Please do not include Labadee. serene56 Posted June 23, 2005 #2 Share Posted June 23, 2005 Royal Caribben is the only cruise that stops in Labadee. You wont see any excursions into Haitii--even on your own. You are not allowed to leave the Labadee compound.

You are not allowed to leave the Labadee compound. I am well aware of that, which is why I requested posters to exlclude Labadee. To my knowledge, the last time a ship called in Haiti was the Amerikanis in 1989, which made a stop in Cap Haitien. My hope was that people would share there experiences of Haiti from 70's and 80's cruises. Remember, Port-au-Prince and Cap Haitien were once popular stops on many RCCL, NCL, and Commodore Cruises. Did Cap H several times on Caribe in the 80's. Once was invited to a shore party with Captain Rolf involving a trip over the mts with a car load of female pass'. He seemed very surprised when I brought my wife! Also visited PAP many times - but that was in an 'official capacity', the last time in 99. A trip to visit a school included several armed escorts....

Capt_BJ Posted June 27, 2005 #8 Share Posted June 27, 2005 What was Cap Haitien like back then? I heard it was once a very beautiful city, far removed from the chaos of Port-au-Prince. Even then Cap H was poor dirty and crowded. True, not as bad as PAP, but maybe just because it was/is much smaller. You didn't have a large slum areas. And if you had the means, you could get out of the city, into the open country easier. Then yuo could see some of the beauty of the land if you went to an area that hadn't yet been stripped of all vegitation by over farming.... In the late 70's PAP actually had lot's of good rest'rnts and a visit had to include a trip to Barbancourte (sp) rum factory - the one up in the mountains - and a night visit to the VooDoo show. 2 must do's. rjscott Posted July 3, 2005 #9 Share Posted July 3, 2005 We visited Cap Hatien off the Caribe just prior to Baby Doc's overthrow. There were armed military all around. We had booked a tour to the Citadel, but it was canceled due to a hurricane that had washed out the road. So, we took a city tour, which ended with a folkloric dance and a "voodoo" demonstration. It was interesting, and I'm glad we went to that port, but the poverty was just overwhelming. My mother's second husband had lived there in the 60's and said it was much nicer then, not so dirty and poverty-stricken.
