QM2 questions for a first timer.

Hello all :)

A friend and I are boarding the QM2 in a few weeks in Adelaide and go thru to Southampton. We are both incredibly excited, but are unsure on a couple of things.

Firstly, does the ship have a wifi internet connection? We are planning on setting up a blog for friends and family to read and were wondering if we can use the ipad or do we have to use the ships computers. What are the costs associated with both options?

Secondly, we have about 9 formal nights and truthfully, there are going to be a few that we wont feel like going to. If thats the case, where else are we able to eat and what are the dress codes? Can we eat in our rooms if we arent in the mood to socialise? (this will probably happen on the odd occasion, our cruise is 34 nights)

THanks in advance for your replies.

Hi Anna, How wonderful to have this trip booked, not to long before you are on board.

The ship does have wifi, it is expensive. You can buy different rates, I've never used this. Others on here will give more information on this.

Room service is available 24 hours, no need to socialise every night. Other venues are available for evening meal. The kings court area transforms into 3 eating areas where the dress code is more relaxed.

Have a great trip and please let us know what you thought of QM2. I love this liner and I sure you will have an amazing time.

Hi Anna. Adelaide is a very easy place to embark as there aren't many of you. And when you arrive onboard it's deserted because most passengers are on shore excursions. So plenty of space to explore. The main dining room will be open for lunch that day on the lower level, as well as Kings Court, the buffet area. We embarked in Adelaide last year.

Wifi is available but expensive. Type up everything into word while off line then simply paste it when you go online.

When not dining in the MDR you have lots of choices. You can have room service or eat casually in the Kings Court buffet. There are other places to grab a snack. The sail out of Adelaide is great as the ship does a 180 turn in the river mouth and people line up on the rocks to wave her off. Enjoy!

The cost per minute for a WiFi connection is the same as using the ship's computers. You can do stuff [compose email messages, write blog postings, edit pictures] offline and then connect just long enough to upload and download files and messages.

I had no trouble connecting a first generation iPad - just be certain to log out when you are finished with a session.

I would recommend Apple's Pages for the iPad as an offline editor. I have not tried the 'Tapatalk' iPad application - it _may_ have some offline features.

Take a look at this thread http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1787763 for a nicely done series of cruise postings.

There are a number of "blogging" apps available for an Ipad-eg http://blogsyapp.com/ With these you can do a "proper" blog complete with pics and formatting. :D There are many examples online - eg http://philipsbigtrip.blogspot.com.au/ I have used Blogger.com successfully in the past http://ukagain2010.blogspot.com.au (don't know however if it works with Ipad) -

You have plenty of time to work something out ( even with only a few weeks to go) - and the long (rather relaxed) cruise to the UK from OZ will allow you plenty of time to do a blog. I used to compile a post offline about every 4 days, and sending it online only used up about 5 minutes Internet time.

Thank you all for your replies, its good to know that there are definitely other options for dining if we dont feel like going formal that night.

Thanks for the tip on typing things up prior to logging onto the net, that will certainly save us quite a bit of time actually hooked up to wifi. Apples pages will be something we will look at for doing up our blogs before posting them online.

Cheers and thanks again for taking the time to reply.
