Rare steamboats Posted May 13, 2013 #26 Share Posted May 13, 2013 Got2Cruise, The river levels can raise and also drop within hours. It depends mainly on the weather. When you have a lot of rain over a couple of hours or let´s say 24 hours there´s a flood wave coming down the rivers. Longer floods are mainly after days of torrential rain plus the snow melt. The ships may either not be able to land anymore because of flooded landings (then they look for a safe landing area) or can´t proceed due to the bridge clearances. The cruise companies either bus people or you can even switch ships when the company has one ship going up and one downriver. So you´ll be bussed the part the ships can´t travel anymore and move on with the other ship. steamboats

warm Posted May 14, 2013 #28 Share Posted May 14, 2013 Just returned to Paris on the Seine. Water levels are low enough for Viking to do the advertised schedule. That's it for us, we fly back to the U. S. in the morning.
