CENTEX CRUISER Posted May 6, 2013 #2 Share Posted May 6, 2013 We take a short cab ride to El Centro, which is the old square area..Prices are better there , and drinks like beer are 1/2 the price or less compared to near the piers..You can get off on the side streets as well in that area , and you are perfectly safe. We like to eat at one of the smaller cafes in the area also.
CENTEX CRUISER Posted May 6, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 6, 2013 Also, if there a lot of people lined up for cabs, just walk out on the main street and hail one yourself, as it is a lot quicker, and tell the driver El Centro. It is only about 2 miles..

Rare crewsweeper Posted May 8, 2013 #7 Share Posted May 8, 2013 The shopping at Puerta Maya pier is pretty extensive. Prices are comparable to downtown shops, although the smaller kiosks downtown will barter better. If you're just looking for knickknacks/tees, etc., the pier shops have a ton of that stuff. If you want a particular item you may need to look both at the pier and downtown. Can't recall a pharamcia in the pier shops, but then I don't go shopping for presecriptions in foreign countries. I would surmise that prescription prices would be slightly higher at pier than in downtown locales. However, you do need to factor in the $14 RT taxi ride on any "savings". Panchos Backyard/Los Cincos Sole at the pier has pretty good food, but there are much better smaller local cuisine/ non-tourist places downtown and around the plaza. Several threads here on local dining places.
