It's believed paramedic Paul Rossington was trying to save his partner Kristen Schroder when they plunged from a cruise ship off the NSW coast.

CCTV captured the pair falling overboard into the Tasman Sea, one immediately after the other, about 8.50pm (AEST) on Wednesday from a deck on the Carnival Spirit cruise ship.

Police called off the search for them about 5pm (AEST) on Friday after helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, police boats and a navy ship searched 500 square nautical miles off the coast of Forster.

When police informed Mr Rossington's family about ending the search, they also provided the family with more information about the footage of the incident.

"Paul was trying to save her," a source who asked not to be identified told AAP.

The footage shows Ms Schroder going over a moment before Mr Rossington went in after her.

I think its pretty poor form that some suggest they were drunk or having sex or whatever.

Those people have perished in a terrible way whatever the circumstances and they have families that will spend the rest of their lives grieving over them.

There is Black humour and there is lack of class or compassion.

More seem concerned with Carnivals reputation than the death of two young people.

What was the old saying? "If you have nothing good to say shut up"

Well said.

Unfortunately Mikey people always assume alcohol is involved. Sometimes bad stuff just happens.

would a sober person climb to the other side of the balcony and hang out there?

I don't think so..

Its a shocking thing to have happened, no one has said its not, but I still think that she must have been drinking to have done that..I really feel for the guy who went in after her, he would have had some idea ( if he was not drunk) with his job description, knowing what would eventuate.

My dad is also on the Another thing wrong with Carnival/Carnival jinxed bandwagon. I say that in this case it's not their fault unless the boat bucked like a horse and threw them overboard or an employee knocked them into the water.

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers do go out to the families of these two precious souls.

While this is a horrible tragedy, for many of us on this board you can't help but wonder how did one person fall overboard let alone 2. It is human nature to speculate as to what happened. Especially since many of us have recently completed or are anxiously awaiting our next cruise experience.

Just this week were brought the news of the young lady suing ccl for jumping/falling overboard. This is starting to become all to common place for me so yes, I would like to know if they fell or jumped.

I just foresee a time when cruise companies will be forced to put iron bars on the balconies to prevent people from jumping.

The photo of the balcony shows the rail is almost at chest height and a TV news report said that Carnival rails are higher than the legal requirement anyway. I really can't imagine how someone could accidentally fall over, even in rough seas (it was calm on the night in question). So it was either one/both of them mucking about and falling or one/both deliberately jumped. RIP

I find it interesting that there was nothing in the national news about the passenger death March 24 on the Coral Princess. The 55 year old woman jumped overboard. They did recover her body a few hours later. Maybe because Carnival has been in the news fairly often recently, the media focuses on them more. I feel sorry for the family involved and also for the passengers on that cruise. I know that on the Coral Princess the passenger's death cast a somber shadow over the rest of the cruise.

The media does single carnival out when disaster strikes.....remember a few months ago the media mentioned an elderly lady on royal carribean was found dead in her cabin when the cruise was over. They said her death appeared to be suspicious but we never heard anymore about it on the news. If it was a carnival ship....it would have had daily coverage!

The Aussie media has a policy of being very coy about reporting suicides generally. Not sure why; maybe to deter copycats? We don't know what happened in this case and maybe we never will which makes it even harder for the families.

From the Sydney Morning Herald today, they have this headline: "Cruise ship couple were fighting the night they fell overboard, says police source". This has been another bad story for Carnival, but the "rest of the story" and on-ship video show that it might not be the fault of this challenged cruise ship line. On another board, someone made the point that people don't just "fall off of a ship". Usually, there is more to "it".

Among the story details: "A couple who went overboard from a cruise ship off the NSW coast and presumably died had been fighting before the fatal incident. More information has emerged about what happened between paramedic Paul Rossington, 30, and his girlfriend Kristen Schroder, 27, on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship. CCTV captured the couple in the ship's casino on Wednesday evening having a short but heated argument. That incident led them to skip dinner with Ms Schroder's family, who were accompanying them on holiday. Around 8.50 pm that night, CCTV captured the pair going overboard into the Tasman Sea, one immediately after the other, from mid-deck of the ship, off the NSW mid-north coast. The footage shows Ms Schroder climbing over the railing and standing on the other side of it as she faced towards the sea. Police did not reveal how long she was standing there and were unable to determine if she intended to jump or simply fell. Mr Rossington was not captured in the CCTV footage when Ms Schroder went over but can be seen moments later jumping overboard. Another CCTV camera captured Ms Schroder striking a lifeboat before she went into the water. Police called off the search for the pair late on Friday afternoon after helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, police boats and a navy ship had searched 500 square nautical miles off the coast of Forster. Carnival Australia has defended the company's safety standards, saying rails on the ship are higher than international regulations require."

Whatever the reason for her deciding to climb the rail, this is just really sad all around. I understand his instinct to jump in to save her but the best thing to do is stay on the ship and alert the ship's staff. The outcome may have been different had he done that.
