Carnival's new "trick" to reduce chair-saving

I have to add. We were on the Valor last week and I couldn't believe my eyes! There were about 6 chairs on the 10th above the pool with custom made, laminated 8 x 10 signs that these people made. I am not kidding! My daughter and I were looking at them. They were pinned to the chair and they read " This chair is reserved for Joan Smith, Cabin 8406 , Empress Deck... It was amazing the work that they put into this. Plus, there was no one sitting in any of them. I told my daughter, " lets just sit for a while and see" She didn't want to go for it. What bugged me, was theis is not allowed and the crew is supposed to enforce this. The time was around 1:00 pm, so they were there quite some time without anyone doing anything about it. i am not a sun worshiper or I probably would have told a crew member. But overall, it was pretty a****ng to see what people will do to HOG a chair!!

Sounds like a pretty nice "personalized" frisbee to me. I am not condoning littering, but I wonder how far one of those babies would fly when properly thrown off the side of a ship?;)

LOL! I have to admit, that was exactly my first thought.

I think Carnival should cover the no saving chair rule in the welcome aboard talk and repeat it daily in the capers. I think a lot of people just don't realize how rude it is to save chairs or that it is against the rules.

JMHO

Oh, there's no doubt in my mind that most of them fully realize that it's rude and against the rules. They just don't give a big fat rat's patootie. These are the same people who are in front of you in the 10-items-or-less line at the supermarket with 25 items, who park in the firelane in front of the store or the handicapped spots because they're too lazy to walk from the parking lot and run red lights because they're in too much of a hurry to wait. In other words, THEIR needs/desires/requirements far outweigh everyone else's. They're everywhere.

:D Yes, but they're "special." :D

Well, that may be another way of looking at it...

but I meant that they are "special" - they don't have to be civilized like the rest of us.

Whenever I see someone being self-absorbed, I think..."Oh, I forgot - you're special." Unless it's in traffic. Then I think... "You're a menace." :D

Great post, Stormy.

Fact of the matter is; You either learn through cruising what is acceptable, you learn through websites what is acceptable, or you do what you have always done and therefore think it is acceptable. I guess we'll have to deal with whatever comes up. It's still a of hell of a vacation, ain't it!

You're right about that!

Absolutely nothing like a cruise, and luckily the great people vastly outnumber the 'special' ones! :p

I think the cruiselines should place timers on all the chairs so that people know what is happening with the chair. The timers should have a 30 minute maximum which is enough time to get lunch, or go into the pool/hottub. After that, the chair is fair game for towel removal.

Getting people to actually comply is another whole problem. They can come back from the casino, dining room, etc. every 29 minutes and reset the timer.

I am not a chair hog, however, when the $22 charge went in, I started bringing my own beach towels from home (thin ones). I have the room steward remove the ones placed in the cabin. Why? because a) I have kids that are sometimes not good about keeping track of towels particularly since they have cruised for years and not had to keep up with them (although I did stress you put them in the dirty towel container when you leave and not leave them on the chair) and b) I was afraid if I did get up and go potty/whatever, someone who had "lost" their $22 towel would appropriate mine and c) there are a lot of disagreements at the purser's desk the last morning when people peruse their bills and find that they have been charged for towels they had turned in (or the room steward had taken them up from the cabin the last night and not "credited" them) Husband was at the desk to inquire about another matter and said at least 50% of the complaints were about towel charges (quite a few about alternative dining charges for people that had not done that, also, so check your statement the day before you disembark and carefully the morning you disembark). If I do go to the beach and want a towel, I ask the room steward for one the night before we go and PERSONALLY, return it to him that evening. My bet is it won't be long until the hard-core, multi cruiser chair hogs all start bringing their own towels.

No, no, no; no littering. Just return the personalized card to the person's cabin with a nice personalized note.

We got off the Fascination on 6/17 and didn't see any chair hogs. That could be because we avoided the main pool and stayed aft. I did not understand why everyone wants to cram around the pool. Too hot, no breeze.

here's an idea...take the signs with their names and cabin #'s and put them on the chairs at the captains table at dinner that night! :p

(sorry, couldn't resist)

  • 8 months later...

When we were on Spirit a few years back, my husband took live video of this obnoxious woman who had saved about 10 chairs with fruit for her family etc. Someone came along and got into a arguement with her and everyone got their knickers in a twist. Is it worth it? My cruises are always waaaaay too short for me to waste even one second getting into with anyone. If she wants every chair on the ship, as far as I'm concerned, she can have them! I'll always find somewhere to sit!!!

THis post is almost a year old and posted by snorkelman (the free cruise wanter) just to try and give him validity. Ignore this it's old

He is not the one that posted to this thread to bring it to the front page.

Look at the most recent post - that's how it got here.

That's what I was thinking, since you have their cabin number I'd just write across it with my trusty sharpie (that I found out you need on one of the threads on this board) "Thanks for saving me that chair you moron!" and slip it under or tape it to their door.

Well, you can complain all you want about the chair hogs, but deep in my heart, I somehow believe that every cruise ship has an empty chair just waiting for me.

I guess it's the Blake Shelton song...

"Some beach

Somewhere

There's a big umbrella casting shade over an empty chair

Palm trees are a-growing and a warm breezes a blowing

I picture myself sitting there

On some beach, somewhere."

On a cold rainy day, when nothing seems to be going right, I think of that empty chair, and sigh.

Yes, the wife has to get up at 7am to get us a chair. The crazy thing is, most are already taken! People are nuts. I used to yell at her, but now it's "eat or be eaten"...so, when it comes down to it - i'd rather just have a chair. (but to our defense we are out there by 830ish and use them 89 percent of the day)

I used to get really mad at towel thieves. We had our towels taken from the pool chairs, while my two children were in the pool for a few minutes. I think Chair Savers may be worse than Towel thieves though. You have given me a great idea though. No one is going to be actually sunnig at 8:00 am, but from what you say, there will be hundreds of towels on the chairs, along with a sundry of other itmes. This would be a great time to help Carnival enforce their "NO CHAIR SAVING" policy, and collect a few hundred "souvenirs" in the process. I could bring those space saver bags and some extra duffle bags in our luggage, fill them with the towels, then open my own business on ebay, selling Carnival Beach Towels. Hmmmmm, nah tooo much work for vacation.

You know, it's not even a matter of learning through cruising what is acceptable. Even in everyday life...you don't walk into a bar and place personal belongings on all the stools for your friends.

People have no couth...their mindset is "I am on vacation, and I paid to be catered to"

Ugh.

If it's that important to them...they should have to drag the darn chair along with them....LOL Now, isn't that a mental picture worth a couple of smiles? :)
