Monkey bar is actually Money Bar (unless there is another place).

I highly recommend this. Short cab ride to their place. They have a fake beach with chairs you can use for free. They have multiple steps and ladders to enter the ocean for swimming and great snorkeling. Bring your own equipment or rent theirs. Drinks and food are affordable, and they don't pester you to buy them.

You could go to the beach.

Shopping isn't economical if you end up buying things that you really don't need.

Most major beaches are around $14-$16 each way per cab of up to 4 people. Some further south are $18-$20. While most of the beaches do not charge an addmission fee, unless you are doing an A.I. option, they will charge for all food and drink. Prices are generally reasonable and food is okay to pretty decent, depending ont he beach and what you order. Use of Water toys is an extra charge. So not necessarily an "economical" option.

OP did not say which ship they are but sounds like they are either at the International Pier or Puerta Maya. There's better shopping including a Los Cincos Soles outlet and Pancho's Backyard for dining at Puerta Maya which is accessible from the IP via a short 5 minute walk. Prices are similar to downtown prices ex the haggling. Some of the hotels between the IP and downtown have beache sopen to cruisers and are within walking distance.

The cab prices being quoted are for up to 4 in a cab, so team up with other cruisers and share the fare!

Money Bar is great if you want to snorkel, but there's no real beach - just a sandy area for sunning. If you want a beach, with a huge pool and good food/drinks/service then spend about $16 for the cab and go to Paradise Beach. Good luck! :)
