I guess July Fourth is as good as any day to celebrate the anniversary of the start of Cunard Line. It was on July 4, 1840 when the first Cunard steamship, BRITANNIA, left Liverpool on her maiden voyage carrying the Royal Mail to Canada and the United States.

The British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company's paddle steamer Britannia sailed from Liverpool for Halifax and Boston at 2pm on this day, 4th July 1840 with sixty-three passengers. They arrived at Halifax ten days later :)

 

The line was founded by Samuel Cunard (not "Sir"; he didn't get his knighthood until much later), amongst others, in May 1839.

 

The line didn't become the "Cunard Line" offically until the 1880s.
