Oosterdam - cigarette smoke?

On the ODam last November/December for 14 days. We had a balcony and never smelled smoke. We held our breath and rushed past the casino and the sports bar (I think that's the one that allows smoking). Otherwise, never smelled it at all.

Possibly booking a last minute cruise on Oosterdam - does it get smoky with cigarette smoke?

I know some ships are worse than others. Only sailed RCI up to now.

TIA

HAL has a new smoking policy this year. You should be fine. Stay away from the smoking side of the Casino or pass thru quickly. Other than that there is no smoking indoor, even in the bars. Balcony smoking and smoking on a couple places on outside decks is still allowed.

I was on the Oosterdam last year.

The only area I noted a smoke problem was on Deck 2 (Lower Promenade) -- in the casino, and the surrounding area. I seem to recall that there was smoking in the Sports Bar (which is across the hall from the casino). However, looking at HAL's website, it doesn't say that smoking is allowed there. Perhaps that has changed. Anyway, it is so close to the casino, you'll probably notice the smoke.

No smoking in the Sports Bar now. HAL new smoking policy started in January 2013 (I think that date is right):

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted.

  • Stateroom verandahs
  • Casino (Active players only)
  • Seaview Bar
  • Outside Decks
    • Sports Deck
    • Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only)

Just book an inside or outside cabin, and stay away from the casino (which still smells like a dirty ashtray on HA ships) and be prepared to move when you are sitting on outside decks and you will be fine. As to booking a balcony cabin, it is like throwing the dice. You might get smoke free, or you might get so much smoke that you will seldom use your balcony. No way to predict which is why we generally do not book balconies on HA. That being said, we recently did have a balcony on the Westerdam (for 35 days) and never smelled any cigarette smoke (we lucked out this time),

We were on the Oosterdam in May and the balcony was rendered useless much of the time due to people smoking on balconies below us. As stated, getting a smoke free balcony is a roll of the dice. So, if it really bothers you get a non balcony cabin. Elsewhere on the ship it was not a problem.

I am a smoker and recently booked a guarantee veranda on the Eurodam. We were given a deck 10 cabin and on either side of us were smokers. Maybe HAL is taking note of who asks for an ashtray for the balcony (on previous cruises) and tries to put these passengers together on a high deck to lessen the smoke problem for others.

This worked out great for me as I didn't feel uncomfortable about lighting up outside and upsetting the neighbours. Also no cabin above me so no problem there either.
