CruisinChic Posted September 16, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2013 We are on the Carnival Freedom and are in Key West. The weather is awful and the entire area where we are headed is covered in serious thunderstorms (pretty much the entire gulf is looking really bad). Do they reroute for situations like this or only for tropical storms/hurricanes? Just curious. We know we will find out more later when we board the ship. Thanks! dixieva Posted September 16, 2013 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2013 I doubt they will re-route just for heavy rains and t-storms. Think that's only for tropical storms or hurricanes. Hopefully weather will get better for you!
shootr Posted September 16, 2013 #3 Share Posted September 16, 2013 Ugh, just pulled up the Key West webcam - looks about as you described. Just the weather gods not playing nice for your itinerary - guess it's time for some drinks and cuddling with a significant other - hopefully you have both!:)
Carnival_Brides Posted September 16, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2013 They reserve the right to reroute. On one of our recent cruises (I think it was my honeymoon) we were rerouted closer to shore on the way home in order to avoid really bad seas. I know the Legend was just rerouted (they substituted something for Belfast) because they would have run into 30 foot waves.
Tithonus Posted September 16, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2013 Only when they perceive it as something that will cause the passengers and crew discomfort, or put the ship in danger. Other than that, you will just get wet.
Scotty'sGirl Posted September 16, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 16, 2013 We sailed around a hurricane on my honeymoon and through Hurricane Ivan on my 1st anniversary cruise. We had to change ports on both trips. I have been lucky enough to have nice weather otherwise so I am unsure
Jimmy Geegitz Posted September 16, 2013 #7 Share Posted September 16, 2013 They usually try to steer around storms if they can.
CoconutJD Posted September 16, 2013 #8 Share Posted September 16, 2013 They can and will reroute if they perceive a danger to the ship/passengers/crew. They likely won't reroute if it's just a matter of bad weather, although they may detour slightly to stay away from the more powerful storms. fair-winds39 Posted September 16, 2013 #9 Share Posted September 16, 2013 We were re-routed to Charleston once while on the Legend due to a hurricane. We had never been to Charleston before, so we were happy to see something new and happier to avoid the hurricane. Enjoy your cruise.
Jimmy Geegitz Posted September 16, 2013 #10 Share Posted September 16, 2013 It's kind of neat to see a storm off in the distance while you're in the sunshine.
