Besides, Berlin is far better for night life. Many more lights than Hamburg :)

Maybe......but you aren't going to Berlin.....you're going to Hamburg......and you aren't going to be there at night. :D

True. But I'll be in London for a couple of nights, and they have lights.

I'm quite excited to get another opportunity, albeit a brief one, to sail on QM2 so soon after my first voyage.

I am absolutely positive that you are going to be happy you made the choice to do this trip. About an hour after sailing you will be sailing past Wedel on the Elbe. They have a Wilkommen Hoft that will greet you with an announcement of the QM2 and the British anthem. Half the town will be there waving and cheering.

We've gotten off in Hamburg.....dropped our luggage at the hotel and taken the train to Wedel just to see her sail past. I can't even describe how awesome the QM2 looks coming around that bend. It's more of an enclosed area which shows off just how massive she is. Quite a magnificent sight.

Which side of the ship is best for viewing?

That's exactly my answer......facing the front of the ship...it's the RIGHT side. Captn calls it starboard.

If you can't get starboard....you are better off watching from an open deck.

Thanks for that advice. It looks like I can only get a guarantee stateroom in the category Im looking at, so will have to hope for the best.

I'd be more than happy hoping for the best. The important thing is that you will be on board. My bigger hope would be for perfect sail away weather because the better the weather, the greater number of little boats you will have in the parade.

By the way......have you looked on YouTube? There are quite a few videos of the sail away...both from the ship and from land. Great fun to watch. One of the regulars is the Mississippi Queen. Odd for Hamburg but she's a typical river paddleboat and she's in all the videos.

Wow! She sails right up the middle of the city. Very impressive. I'm quite excited now.

A Queens Grill experience will hopefully also be just as exciting.

It will be exiting. I hope you know how to work a runway. The Queens & Princess Grill restaurants both have one you know.

Ah, the confidence of youth. :D

But we don't stay young forever Austcruiser, and as we get older we come to appreciate the old-school moves - as well as a little Juvederm, Botox and photo rejuvenation. Edited by Whitemarsh

I'll grow old gracefully. Plus I'm like a classic suit. I never go out of style :)
So first time in the Queens Grill hey. Well, you're about to go into the snakepit. What are you planning to wear? :)
As it is a two day cruise I understand there is no formal night. Therefore, I assume my Burberry suit with a pair of LV lace up Derbys will suffice. I can take a couple of shirts and ties to choose from each night.

The bulk of the luggage will remain at my London hotel. Edited by Austcruiser84
You'll look very smart. What about for embarkation?

I've now travelled Queens Grill and Princess Grill, both TA. Aside from bigger room and nice jacuzzi tub I preferred Princess Grill dining room and Princess Grill 10th floor balcony to QG 9th floor, even though 9th floor balcony was bigger. Butler service was really no big deal and just your cabin attendant.

Less tables, less pretention in PG dining room (confirmed to me by waitor who served me in both). Better service, with food the same and more room between tables.

Next time PG for sure.

The price difference between PG and QG is negligible, so I feel I'm duty bound to sail QG (even though it is only for 2 nights).

We have never experienced the Cunard Grills -- but I am wondering what you mean about "pretension" in the Queens Grill?? I know what I believe to be the meaning of pretentiousness-- but I haven't ever experienced it onboard a Cunard ship (although it is sometimes rampant here in this Forum ) !! :)

How does it manifest itself onboard?? Is it just what people say?? or do??

I was talking to friends today -- they are very experienced World Cruisers- have spent several hundred nights at sea over the past decade. They have never cruised with Cunard -- and asked me how I coped with the "class distinction" . I answered that I thought that there is more class differentiation on Royal Caribbean ships than there is on Cunard.

The crowd in the Queens Grill does tend to be a tad older than the Princess Grill, which does make the QG vibe slightly less energised than the Princess Grill. Can't say I've witnessed as pretentious behaviour in the QG though, unless you count a frantic desire to socialise with the captain and arrange for people to sit at his table pretentious. That I have witnessed.

The dishes that appear on both a la carte menus are the same - the oven baked Dartmoor lamb for example - but the QG a la carte menu does have more options on it; additionally, there are dishes you can have for free such as caviar, which you can't have for free in the PG.

I've always thought the service in the Princess Grill was excellent, as it is in the Queens Grill. Having said that there were a few hiccups in the Queens Grill which I didn't experience in the Princess Grill, such as once having to refill my wine glass myself (but I don't know if you could really call that a hiccup). The hilariously burnt crepes suzette were definitely a hiccup though, not that I minded at the time as it was the second round of crepes suzette. Edited by Whitemarsh
The CWC status is part of why I want to do it
I had calculated that the Caribbean Celebration would put me at exactly 70 nights and Platinum, but then I realized that I had counted my first voyage as 10 nights when it was 9. My next trip will be number 7 so it's all moot for the time being.
