Supposedly, when the house was sold and turned into a tourist attraction, Otto (Toby) Bruce and his wife made up a bunch of stories that they thought made Hemingway and the house more colorful. These included the existance of the six-toed cats which supposedly were given to Hemingway by a ship captain and the fable about the construction of the pool. But outside of the stories that the tour guides tell, there is no evidence that there were any cats there when Hemingway and Pauline lived there - no photos or mention in any letters or books.

And this story comes from a disgruntled former employee at The Hemingway Home.
