We are planning a feb2015 trip to rome on us air when the mileage is only 35k round trip.we would like to get a third empty seat for more room. Has anyone done this and is it possible? Note the envoy class is not reduced miles so that is out of question. Thanks.

Are there three seats available in economy for the mileage you want to spend? If so, you should be able to do this, but will need to call the find out that particular carriers instructions on how to book the third seat.

One other thing--have you looked at the taxes for those seats? It might end up cheaper to use the miles for one envoy seat and pay for an economy and upgrade to Envoy with miles for the other.

Also consider with the AA US merger the info you get from US might not be good for very long as they have already said that AA's advantage program will be the one going forward. (What changes will take place remain to be seen, but you can bet your bottom dollar some will come)
