Taking Grandmother on first cruise - need advice!

If your grandmother has trouble walking, it could make the cruise a lot more enjoyable for her if you rent her a motorized scooter.

We have met a number of elderly people on cruise ships who tend to avoid going to shows or other activities just because the exertion to get there and back is too exhausting for them, or even painful.

Having the use of a motorized scooter makes all the difference, giving them independence to get around all over the ship by themselves.

But it is really such an individual thing. I also know a woman in her nineties who is more lively and in better condition than many 60 year old passengers on the cruise ships.

If any of us offered to get her a wheelchair, she would just laugh and offer to push us around in the wheelchair.

Even if your grandmother does not want or need a wheelchair to use on the ship, she should at least consider using the wheelchair service provided for embarkation and disembarkation, times that can often be a hassle with the crowds and ramps and waiting in lines.

Excellent advice. The OP can also rent a wheelchair for the duration of the cruise. Don't know Celebrity's policy but RCCL lend us one for my grandmother years ago on her last cruise. BTW, another vote here for Celebrity ad aqua class.

WHAT! this is good news for my mom who will also be 88 in our upcoming cruise! do we have to book in advance?

This is our first time on Celebrity. We did Oasis a few years back and it was a little too big for her, so we did just one section at a time.

Also this time we picked an Accessible cabin, bonus for us as it looks like it's huge compared to a regular cabin, and with accessible doors and grab bars in the shower.

You can rent a scooter to use on board. Contact Celebrity for the name of the company. The scooter will be waiting in your cabin. We used a wheel chair once onboard and found it to be very hard pushing around since carpet covers many areas. Don't need to use all the time but may be useful when you need to go from dinner to shows which are at opposite ends of the ship. If you just want embarkation and disembarkation just ask when you check in.
