Hello cruise fans....

We booked an Asian cruise for this fall and are looking for suggestions from our fellow cruisers.

1) best flight from LA to Tokyo and then Hong Kong to LA

2) Is it best to book it yourself or book though the cruise line

3) Planning on a few days earlier in Tokyo what is a good hotel

4) With limited time in Tokyo what's the best sights to see

5) Of course if you have been to any of these ports,

  • Mt Fuji (Shimizu), Japan
  • Kobe, Japan
  • Kagoshima, Japan
  • Nagasaki, Japan
  • Shanghai (Baoshan), China
  • Taipei(Keelung),Taiwan
  • Hong Kong, China

Suggestions on what to see...

Thanks in advance

Try Kayak for the flights.

Check the various sites, and also check Choice Air on the Celebrity site.

Sometimes they are about the same, sometimes much better.

Choice Air is especially good for one-way fares, but since you will be doing a round-trip, open-jaw you may get better results booking directly with the airlines. I'd start with Kayak...

I'm not sure what you mean by that. When I went on Kayak, I used the multiple-destination option and, just for fun, I plugged in some dates in the fall for LAX to NRT and HKG to LAX. The cheapest fare was on Delta, at $827. They give you all the flight information, stopovers, schedule, etc. Let me know if you're still having trouble... BTW, that seemed like a great price to me; I was expecting a lot higher!

Flights...if you are flying economy, most airlines are similar although I'd choose a non US carrier. If you can fly business class then I'd recommend cathay pacific or perhaps other carriers with fully reclineable (lie flat) seats. Note: many airlines still have seats which they call lie flat, but arent. Check seatguru.com for the truth.

I would book myself...there is no advantage to booking through choice air unless they have some special deal. Choice air does not show all the flights. There are many flight search options....including hipmunk, kayak, orbitz and others, each with their own way of showing flights and fares...and they do differ although I've never figured out why.

There are so many good hotels in Tokyo....that's a question to research on the web because there are different areas. The "class" hotels include the Okura in Raponggi, but there are so many others.

Sights in Tokyo....just walk on the street. It's a fascinating city. I've been there a number of times and the options are endless....go to part of a kabuki, go to the Bunraku (puppets), eat sushi, eat more sushi, eat shabu shabu...there are so many wonderful food options. IMHO, there is no absolutely don't miss site, but like NYC, there are so many options that you have to do some reading to pick what you want to do. Subways are very easy to use and very safe.
