I've been told that our carry-on bag for the land travel is limited to something the size of a briefcase. Is that true?

We took regular sized backpacks without issue.. I think it basically needs to fit in the bus overhead storage or under your train seat..

There's no overhead storage on the train so that is the criteria. You have only the space under your bench seat or what you can fit under your feet without encroaching on the people sitting opposite. The bench seats have a table in the middle with two people facing forward, two backwards. You can place cameras and smaller objects on the table. Keep in mind that you'll climb a steep circular staircase to the 2nd level in the train car. The first level is the store, kitchen and dining.
