Did we set our expectations too high for our first taste of the suite life?

We have had only 2 bad experiences with butlers and/or concierges - butler on the Star a few years ago was terrible, but a quick chat with Virginia quickly straightened that out. Our concierge on the Pearl was rude and inattentive - it must have been a personality clash as most people rave about him (even on this board!). We gave him what we considered a minimal tip and we wanted to get that back after his treatment of us at final disembarkation. However, our butler, Roland, more than made up for the concierge's shortcomings. Needless to say, he got a very nice tip. But, I think that experience is important and we now know what to expect and how to handle (or work around) poor service.:)

My last two cruises were in suites and I never thought I would say this, but I think I'm spoiled and might not enjoy the balcony cabin I booked for Nov. Of the 24 cruises I have been on 1/3 have been in inside cabins and enjoyed those cruises tremendously. The first two times in a suite I wasn't aware of all of the perks. The third suite cruise I missed out on some of the perks, but on the 4th suite cruise I was totally into the suite life.

On each suite cruise we have had excellent butlers and concierges. Belki and Fernando are the only names I can remember though.

My advice is to check out all of the perks. They vary from cruise line to cruise line so research is important.

I believe we now have Monica as Concierge on the Pearl. Does anyone have any experience with her? Sailing June 22.

IMO, she's another one that you will get along with or be invisible to. But don't worry, you won't be alone either way. :D

We had Monica on the Sun last March and we thought she was fantastic. Would be very happy to have her again.

It's interesting that there are so many different reactions to concierges. From our perspective, we'd just as soon be ignored (if ignored means being sought out for random conversations in the public areas). If we need something from the concierge, we'll call or stop by the desk. When we're having a conversation over breakfast, I don't really want to switch gears and make small talk about what we're going to do with our day just so somebody can tick it off their to-do list.

On the other hand, if I were standing near the concierge desk and was pointedly ignored, that would be another issue entirely. That's just unprofessional.

Just got off the Pearl, we had Monica for Concierge and Charlie as a butler. We were in a non haven suite and it wasn't really clear what to expect. We received letters from Monica about where to meet for early walk offs, meeting place for early entry to the chocolate Buffett, etc... We never met her at all. I would have no clue what she looked like. Our butler walked us on the ship and walked us to Cagney's for lunch. He was basically responsible for all food inquiries and DVD movie check out. He was very nice. We got treats everyday and brought us extra chocolate dip strawberries. But we aren't too demanding. We were initially going to use the walk off for disembark day but it wasn't necessary as there were no lines for us.

I'm sorry your embarkation and disembarkation wasn't what you expected. We had a very good experience boarding Pearl as suite guests. We met in a smaller lounge and were escorted off the ship in the first group of passengers.
