sandc4e Posted March 25, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 25, 2014 I am wondering if folks have a preference to Port or Starboard while cruising. This is specific to the Getaway, but what are your opinions? We are first time cruisers and honestly don't know why they'd be different. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Va. Plumber Posted March 25, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 25, 2014 Not to be a wise A** but the only difference is that one is on one side and the other is on the other side. Ship docks on different sides depending on port.
sandc4e Posted March 25, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted March 25, 2014 ...Ship docks on different sides depending on port. That's what I thought as well, just want to have an idea of peoples experiences on the Getaway. We already have our room assigned and are happy with it - just trying to obtain as much knowledge as possible.
GrabMyWrist Posted March 25, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 25, 2014 We chose Starboard while heading to Alaska last year. Our thought process was that we'd see more that way. Honestly, going up the Inside Passage is beautiful no matter where you bunk. Some ports dock the ship differently. One may dock Port and another Starboard. All that said, we picked Starboard for our Getaway cruise too.
Demonyte Posted March 25, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 25, 2014 One can never predict which side will be dock side in each port (it varies based on the color of captain's socks, weather, maintenance needs, crew lifeboat drills, etc, etc) so that doesn't make difference. Only thing that can be said is the side when leaving/arriving to specific ports like in NYC the Statue of Liberty is on the starboard side when departing, port side when coming back, etc. On Breakaway class ships the fireworks might be seen from balconies on other side, but that's about it. Ship's general direction during sea days can also be a deciding factor - for example on ships that sail from colder homeports one might select the side based on which way the ship will be on sea days at the beginning or the end, going north or south. SissasMomE Posted March 25, 2014 #8 Share Posted March 25, 2014 Can you explain your preference? Thanks Rochelle Getaway backs in most of the time, so a starboard balcony will have the view of the port.
Va. Plumber Posted March 25, 2014 #9 Share Posted March 25, 2014 Getaway backs in most of the time, so a starboard balcony will have the view of the port. Say what? What difference does front or back mean? One side or the other will always be away from port.
SissasMomE Posted March 25, 2014 #10 Share Posted March 25, 2014 Say what? What difference does front or back mean? One side or the other will always be away from port. What?? If it is backing in, the starboard side would be facing the port. Not sure what you are asking.
Va. Plumber Posted March 25, 2014 #11 Share Posted March 25, 2014 What?? If it is backing in, the starboard side would be facing the port. Not sure what you are asking. Unless the dock was on the other side. Then that side would be facing the port.
rochelle_s Posted March 25, 2014 #12 Share Posted March 25, 2014 Getaway backs in most of the time, so a starboard balcony will have the view of the port. Thanks that is good to know. I did read somewhere that the port side is better for viewing the fireworks but we would likely not be in the cabin for that anyways.
