South Pacific on Statendam or SE Asia on Volendam

While on board the Volendam in December/January, we booked another cruise on the Volendam - 28 days Singapore to Hong Kong. departing Dec. 22/14. However, we are having second thoughts as the 2nd part of this b2b is exactly the same itinerary that we did this past Dec/Jan.

In doing research, I have found a 42 day cruise on the Statendam departing Dec. 3, San Diego to San Diego, visiting the South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands and several ports in Mexico that we have not been to. We have visited the South Pacific four times so this is not the issue.

Our main concern is that there are 20 sea days. Although we enjoy sea days, we are concerned that there may not be enough lectures, movies, etc. We do not participate in bingo, trivia or other games but interesting, informative lectures are very important to us.

Hopefully someone who has done the main part of this itinerary, mainly the Hawaiian Islands and the Society Islands, can comment on the onboard activities.

Please note that the Statendam is doing this itinerary in three phases - 30 day (the main part), 42 day and 45 day.

There have been a lot of activities on the Hawaii and Tahiti cruise in the past. Usually 3 people going lectures, mostly 2 lectures per day; movies will be repeated on a 2 week basis, but you can borrow from a huge list of DVDs for your cabin (complimentary).

There is a review of the February cruise in the Members Cruise Review section of CC, the first one, by Kennnicott. This review talks about many aspects of the ship and cruise and is quite positive.

We have enjoyed this cruise, especially the sea days , but we like to walk the deck, read and just relax: this cruise is perfect for that.

There were at least 2 or 3 lectures per day, frequent culinery demonstrations, wine tastings, daily afternoon teas, dancing with the stars competition for both participants and watchers, movies, computer classes, you can rent or borrow dvd's for your stateroom t.v. and there is a well stocked library. In short we were never bored as we always had something to do and frequently could not work in everything we wanted to do. This is on the 30 day Hawaii/So. Pacific portion. We have also been on several Mexico cruises and there will not be quite as many lectures but everything else will be there.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.:D Wish you could take us along.;)
