I have seen people on past cruises with Walkie Talkies seems like a great idea for a large group , any special kind to look for or will a Walmart inexpensive pair work?:)

We got the Motorola 5-7 mile range, but sorry, can't tell you how well they work, leaving in 3 weeks. We will probably use them after cruise so went with good brand just in case.

Because of the construction of the ship and all the radio equipment on board, you cannot go with the cheap models. You need a good multi-ban W/T in order for them to work. Remember, don't use them in the show lounges, dining room or other public venues like that. You might find your fellow passengers not liking you very much. The whole W/T issue is a difficult one because many people who use them are rude and insensitive to their fellow passengers. I've experienced people talking on them during the shows, and it gets very irritating.

Get the kind with rechargable batteries coz they do eat through the batteries.

 

Pick names other then mom and dad... you'd will be surprised on how manykids will be screaming for mom and ad to answer the things. Please teach the kids not to use them in public areas like the shows.

 

Also-- sub channels. try getting a channel with few users on it. You will pick up everyone that is on the cruise that is using it.. they will not be private.

 

Telpephones have voice mail now that can be intouch with using the ships public telephones.

We got ours at Big 5~Motorola 7 mile range with sub channels~about 30 bux a pair and used rechargable batteries. Another thing we did was to buy the W/T with an "ear bud port" (like a cell phone headset) and used them so that whenever we spoke to eachother it was only heard in our ear and thus did not disturb other pax. They worked great on Celebrity the only place I had trouble hearing was in the Casino:rolleyes: ('course I had trouble winning there too.......:p ) Choose your "main" channel # and then a "sub" channel # and then LOCK THE KEYPAD so that you don't hit a button by mistake and get off the channel everyone else is on. Write down the chosen frequency and keep it with you just in case one of the units gets off the right channel, you can reset it.

Thanks for all your help just went and bought rechargeable 8 mile walkie talkies.We are all adults so it will just be for emergency use and locating each other while in port in Alaska.

My Motorola 5 miles worked well enough most of the time. Several decks apart and close to the center of the ship it gets hard, but it's a good thing to have.

Suggest you don't buy the children's toy cheapo variety:( . You will need more than the FRS 14 channels offered by the cheap ones, otherwise you'll be on the same frequencies as the other 2,000 pax:eek: . Be aware that the more expensive models use the GMRS frequency (General Mobile Radio Service) as well as the FRS (Family Radio Service). For use within the USA, you are required to have an operating license for GMRS which is available (online, too) for $75 bucks from the FCC for a 5-year license. Simple to apply for and get. For use outside of the USA, the rules vary by country. All that said, we bought our GMRS Motorla Talk-Abouts at Costco (about $60 for the pair including rechargers, earbuds, belt clips, etc) and we love them:) . We've used them on cruises, also ski resorts, amusement parks, flea markets, etc. They work fine on the ships, and are great for keeping track of each other on shore. Being able to go in and out of shops, open air markets, etc. and then find each other again is GREAT! We use code names, never use them in shows, restaurants, enclosed places etc. and keep them on "vibrate". 6 of us had them tuned to the same channel and subchannel on the last cruise and we never had interference from other users. We noticed they were even selling W/T in the ship's gift shop (RCCL). If you buy good rechargeable ones, use them discreetly, and get the FCC license so they can be used at home, :cool: you'll be a happy camper as well as a happy cruiser. Safe travels!

When youre not talking to people on them, you can also use them as a source of entertainment. Just sit back and go through all the channels listening to other people's conversations. I do this a lot in amusement parks while waiting in line for rides.

Ah yes entertainment!!!! I love ours we use them all the time on the ship for our group!!!! We have a chanel for the kids to use so all the parents can keep a look out for the kids!!!!

If your WT's are AM, amplitude modulated, the louder you talk the further the signal will travel. Pick units that will also work under water because that's where they will be if you use them while sitting next to me at a show.

We took our ancient walkie-talkies on our cruise last week on the Carnival Glory. They did not work very well because they are so hold I guess. On the Glory you were able to rent walkie-talkies for the week at the pursers desk (friends of my daughter were using them). She said they worked good, but I don't know what the cost was.

Ours worked well, just couldn't hear them cause we were always on the lido deck which was too noisy to hear the radio. We aren't taking them on the next cruise.
