Geology_Rocks Posted October 14, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 14, 2014 None of the cruise ship sponsored excursions appeal to me for Antigua. I'd like to see a bit of the island, then hit the beach. Are there vendors hanging around the pier waiting to take you on that kind of adventure? We've had good luck on other islands doing this sort of thing. Dooglas55 Posted October 14, 2014 #2 Share Posted October 14, 2014 Hi GR, you'll find plenty taxi drivers at the pier head looking for work, we had a great driver(can't remember his name)took 8 of us on a quick tour of the island, finishing off with 3 hours at Darkwood beach, wow what a beach, with chairs and a great beach bar, hardly anyone on the beach when we were there, turquoise water, soft white sand, probably the best beach on the island, I think it was $20 a head, but that was in 2012, you'll love Antigua, we did, so much so we came back the next year for two weeks, stayed at Cocobay Resort, fabulous, hope this helps, Doug. Geology_Rocks Posted October 14, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted October 14, 2014 Thanks Dooglas! We've been to Antigua before but it was 7 years ago. That time we did a snokel/kayak excursion and it was fun, but we want to do something different this time.
runner15km Posted October 14, 2014 #4 Share Posted October 14, 2014 Last year we hired a driver for the day who gave us a island tour and beach time. Very good tour for 25.00 ea.

flycatcher Posted October 15, 2014 #7 Share Posted October 15, 2014 We will be in Antigua on Oceana early January and have again booked with Lawrence of Antigua. We go to English Harbour,Nelson's Dockyard,Shirley Heights, National Park and Rainforest, then he will drop us at Valley Church Beach and take us back to the ship when we are ready. You do not pay until then so all good. Look him up on google.

EatonDoolittle Posted October 15, 2014 #10 Share Posted October 15, 2014 Any good for snorkelling? There is not much snorkeling anywhere in Antigua, the water is murky.
flycatcher Posted October 16, 2014 #11 Share Posted October 16, 2014 Although snorkelling is poor, this trip covers the main places to see and is a good price. P&O don't cover all these in one excursion and charge more for a small part of it. The beaches on Antigua are amazing and the water lovely. caribsun Posted October 16, 2014 #12 Share Posted October 16, 2014 The water at VCB is unique, looks like a milky blue. :)
Geology_Rocks Posted October 16, 2014 Author #13 Share Posted October 16, 2014 I guess I'll travel light and leave my gear on the boat at this port.
