QM1 Posted January 3, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 3, 2015 last week the owners of German cruise ship ms Deutschland were asking for bankrupcy it seems ... Its reality now. After the world cruise was cancelled in December, its now fact that the German TV-"dream boat" is bankrupt and the whole thing is going to the court. 60 million Euros debt is too much for a single ship operation. I wonder where this cruise ship will end up. Its 17 years old now.
hypercafe Posted January 3, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 3, 2015 I have just read that Crystal has bought this ship. I wonder what they will do with her as I do not think she would be very popular with north american people. QM1 Posted January 20, 2015 #5 Share Posted January 20, 2015 I have just read that Crystal has bought this ship. I wonder what they will do with her as I do not think she would be very popular with north american people. The sale fell through. There are talks with other investors. Deilmann is now bankrupt. Most of the land-based staff have lost their job. Btw why do you think a classic cruiseship would not be popular with Americans? Not enough noise, aggressive colors and slot machines? hypercafe Posted January 20, 2015 #6 Share Posted January 20, 2015 (edited) I do not think it would be popular because their are no veranda cabins and the interiors are made to look like the great liners in Germany's past from the 20,s. vistaman Posted January 22, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted January 22, 2015 i only saw her docked in antwerp and also in Rhodes - she gave a worn impression a friend who did visit her told me it was like an old "better" family hotel of decennia ago, lots of small decoration and furniture and tapestry and no casino
English Voyager Posted January 23, 2015 #8 Share Posted January 23, 2015 The 2015 Berlitz Guide rates the ship 4+ stars. The staterooms vary in size from 129 sq. ft to 365 sq. ft.
trickyoat Posted January 29, 2015 #9 Share Posted January 29, 2015 I wonder if the likes of Fred Olsen, Saga, or even the All Leisure Group (ie Voyages of Discovery/ Swan Hellenic etc) would consider Deutschland? I'm quite sure they must have thought about her. If the creditors want at least some money back these operators may just get themselves a reduced price bargain buy.. Hope that if they did they would rename the ship, the existing name is not exactly going to endear itself to quite a few nationalities. Just saying. Griller Posted February 4, 2015 #12 Share Posted February 4, 2015 (edited) Ok - rename it to: GERMANY ;):D The old Deutschland ship was renamed the Lutzow. It didn't help, the ship was never a lucky ship and had one failure after another and finally sank in the Baltic after being used as target practice. Quite an interesting history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_cruiser_Deutschland Just been reading up here, http://cruisenewzealand.org.nz/vessel/deutschland/ It looks like a lovely ship, what a pity its not in service, hard for a small luxury ship to be profitable these days. QM1 Posted May 19, 2015 #13 Share Posted May 19, 2015 The "Deutschland" has been sold to an US-based owner, apparently named Absolute Nevada, for 21 Million $$$s, well above the last estimate. Many crew members will stay.
Griller Posted May 20, 2015 #14 Share Posted May 20, 2015 Ok - rename it to: GERMANY ;):D Seems less likely now with US owners, anyway do you think that would have helped?
gcmv Posted May 27, 2015 #15 Share Posted May 27, 2015 Seems less likely now with US owners, anyway do you think that would have helped? No, I don't think so ... ;) Perhaps the new Nevada owner will rename it to: "SHIP OF THE DESERT" :D
leonardofan Posted June 11, 2015 #16 Share Posted June 11, 2015 Apparently the ship will be used to reactivate the Semester at Sea program
