Back to the basic question - would $250,000 get one home from French Polynesia.... If it cost $90,000 from Punta Arenas which has somewhat limited air service, one could guess - and I stress guess - that $250,000 could be adequate.

 

Had a friend medevac'd from Cape Town to Orlando for about $65,000 but she did not require extensive medical support on the trip.

 

That's the thing........

 

You don't know in advance how ill or injured and how much supportive care you would require. How can you know how much something will cost when you don't know what it is you need?

Keep in mind that you only have to get from Bora Bora to Honolulu to receive USA medical care.

Trying to determine how much insurance coverage to purchase - we are going to be doing the south pacific (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc..) in Feb 2015. Of the plans I am considering one offers $250,000 or, for an additional insurance cost of $400 the coverage goes up to $500,000. Would $250,000 get a person back to the USA from Bora Bora?

May I suggest that you visit the medjetassist.com website. You don't have to purchase different levels of coverage, since there is one fee for all areas. My wife and I purchase full-time annual coverage (ages 73 and 71) for about $350/year. This includes both of us for this one fee and provides coverage for traveling within the U.S. as well as on trips such as you're taking.

The quotes I've heard range from $20000 for a short Caribbean to Florida evacuation to over $100000 for a US to Europe evacuation. I think 250k should be adequate.

Earlier this year our neighbor was medevac'd from Aruba to northern Illinois with a stop in Miami for Immigration purposes and the cost was $75,000.00. This was with the use of a private medical jet.
