We made it back over and the hubby wanted to hold Lisa.

I was able to get 2 shots and then my camera died. Doesn't it figure!!! Both cameras were now dead and I couldn't get any more shots of Sakari with the animals or either of them with the Lemur.

PB110205%20copy-L.jpg

We were to catch our boat over to Frenchys around 4pm. I noticed that the boat was pulling out and we had missed it. We would have to wait on the next boat to come along.

I gathered our things and went to the dock and ask about the next boat. I was getting a little worried because we stayed with the animals a little longer than we expected, but you get so tied up in that stuff and lose track of time.

We were told that a boat would either come around from the side for us at this dock, or there would be another boat on the other side of the island. I didn't want to chance it and miss the one coming here by walking over there.

At one point I seen them contact the boat coming around that was actually going to pass us up and head over to the dock on the other side of the island. They flagged them down and we were on our way by 4:10pm.

Good bye Little French Key. You gave us the most amazing day ever! We will forever be grateful for our visit and amazing experiences there.

One last photo that my camera came on for a split second to shoot and then died for good.

Leaving the island and looking back toward the jaguar cage area.

Arriving back at the dock of Frenchys (obviously this picture was taken earlier in the day).

PB110533%20copy-L.jpg

We were able to walk down the dock at Frencys and get right into the van leaving for the port. There were still several other cruisers with us, so at least we weren't the only ones making the most of our time there. They also had a few workers (3 I believe) that were in the van with us. They were dropped off at the "Spanish Town" and then off we went to the port.

The driver did tell us that the country spoke 3 languages: English, Spanish and Croatian.

It was a 30 minute drive back and once we got to the port, we went straight back to the ship to shower and get food.

I do hope you all enjoyed my review of Little French Key in Roatan, Honduras. It was amazing and we had the best day there. It was a struggle, even though you wouldn't know it. I took tons of pictures while snorkeling, but for some reason, I was having MAJOR issues with my camera...and didn't even know it until I started preparing for this review and took a look at the pictures. I'm not sure what was going on with it but a majority of my snorkeling pictures turned out like this:

PB110143%20copy-L.jpg

They were VERY blurry, foggy and TONS of what appeared to be spots on the lens.

PB110145%20copy-L.jpg

I'm really not sure what happened or what was going on. I ended up with at least 40 or so pictures like this and even some of the "good" photos I had were clear but yet had the spots. From the looks of the picture above, it appears that maybe the flash was firing? I'm just not sure. I just know that I have never had this problem before and I sure hope I never have it again. I'm sure I missed a lot of great pictures due to this problem. So sad.

Up next, my final thoughts on Little French Key.

Yes' date=' we are planning on doing one, and hopefully all will chime in and contribute. Wendy and I are 'gung ho' and the others, not so much. LOL

I wish we had known your cabin number so we could have left you a message. We should have gotten together one evening.

We had such a blast. We have decided that we need 'sister time' every year now!

[/size']

Yippee. I can't wait to hear your cruise version and what all you did. I can picture you and Wendy being gung-ho on it. Hopefully Pam and Kim will contribute some. I would like to know what they thought...especially of their surprise. :D

Sister time every year would be nice huh? I have decided that we just might need a "girls" cruise with me, Sakari and Kendra...at least once to try it out. I almost came home and booked the Epic for some time during Sakari's Christmas vacation. I'm still considering it.

The suite/VIP restaurant is Il Adagio on deck 5 on the Sun. I believe that she corrected herself and stated that it was Moderno' date=' which is near the Buffet and Sports Bar on deck 11. They had it open in the mornings for breakfast with a small buffet. Cagney's is on deck 12.

[/size']

Yes, Moderno. Sorry for the confusion. As Robin said, I tried correcting myself, but of course since it wasn't written in pink, others may be skipping over it and not catching that part.

We loved it in there and was a lot better than going to the buffet on most mornings. If there was ever something we wanted above and beyond Moderno, we would just walk over to the buffet and grab it and come back to our table at Moderno. So nice. I wish all of the ships had that option.

Your commentary is so interesting and I love the pictures!

Thanks so much for joining me and liking the review and pictures. :)

I used to work in parrot rescue and I'm in awe of these enclosures and how good the macaws look. The blue and gold has a beautiful long tail which means he's happy (taking care of his tail) and has a plenty of room to maneuver. The amazons look great...they are one of the first to show bad conditions and it's obvious they're being fed properly as their feathers are shiny and in good condition. I also didn't see any stress bars, another indicator of a happy bird. Thank you for sharing this with us and showing the story :)

I'm so glad that you came on here and told me your thoughts about the care of the birds. It's great to know that they are doing such a great job of caring for them. :) You can tell that they really love the animals and love what they do for them.

What time did you arrive and when did you leave? One of the reasons I choose Maya was its only about 10 minutes away if that. The Dawn arrived at 7:30am in 2013, the Sun is about 2 hours later this time around

Thanks

We arrived in port at 10am and left at 6pm. Even though it's never "enough" time or the time you "wished" you could stay, we felt as if it was a very long day and plenty of time spent there.

If the Dawn arrives in port at 7:30am and the Sun doesn't arrive until 10am, the Dawn is more than likely leaving earlier than the Sun's 6pm departure time. Therefore, making it probably the same amount of time spent at the port. Am I right?

Love your review of Little French key. The Animal Sanctuary is absolutely beautiful.

Thanks so much for the beautiful pictures..

LFK looks as beautiful as it did when we visited on our last cruise. I booked it solely based off of your first review of it and was not disappointed.

Were there very many people there that day? When we visited last April, we were the only ship in port that day.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

It is even more beautiful today than it was back then. I just could not believe the improvements they have made. It's so nice there and truly a slice of heaven.

We were the only ship in port this day and there wasn't very many people here at all. There's probably less people here this day than there was the last time we were here. It was an absolutely amazing day. One that I will never forget and one that completely changed my thoughts on where to go when we come back to Roatan.

Thank you! I have been trying to find out more information about the Carnival fiasco. This explains a lot...

That being said, I am still undecided on the island...how many people were there whem you went?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Forums mobile app

I'm glad I could clear it up and glad to know for myself what was going on.

There was hardly anyone there when we were there. I can't even imagine looking at the pictures and even still being undecided. Here's the way I look at it...if we are the only ship in port...awesome. If there is another ship in port, how many people from those 2 ships do you really think A) knows about Little French Key B) Out of all of those people, how many you think are actually booking this place and C) This place is huge with several beaches to relax on and I can't imagine it ever being crowded even with a bunch of people there.

I "personally" would go there if there were 10 ships in port because no matter what, I can guarantee everyone from the ships aren't going to be there...they are going to be on a crowded ship excursion or they will be going to one of the popular places such as West Bay were all the crowds are at. Just something to think about. :)

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and pictures. My family and I going in early January on the Dawn. It is our first Caribbean cruise and I have relied heavily on your other reviews in planning our excursions. I am so excited to see these current updates from you.

You are very welcome and I'm glad I can be of some help to you in planning. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and I will help as much as I can. :)

Your review is wonderful, as always!! Thank you so much for taking time both during your vacation and now to share it with us!

I have to comment on the French Key issue in general. I have cruised on Carnival and my next cruise is with scheduled to be with them. I have also visited LFK in the past (from your recommendation) and I feel very unsettled after seeing the before/after pictures from above. I was there last year, during the "Before" time and seeing the "After" is, well, appalling to me. It looks so unnatural over there and it kind of just breaks my heart. I know money talks and all that, but it just makes me sad. End rant and sorry for the break in your very good review.

Carry on! :)

Thank you so much for commenting. These are exactly my thoughts as well. It was so beautiful in that area (and still is), but it feels "different" now. The "line of division" makes it feel so "touristy" and unnatural. I just hate that this has happened. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Carnival. I cruised with them last year on the Dream and absolutely loved it and had the best time ever. I will cruise with them again. I just hate that this has happened. Like you said, money talks for sure.

Thanks for the info. The Dawn seems to cruise 2Kts faster than the Sun. I guess thats why it has a 10:00ish docking vs last year on the Dawn it was 7:30am on the Dawn. If I remember correctly we did leave at 5pm

Final thoughts on Little French Key.

I absolutely love this place. I fell in love with it last May when we were there and I fell in love with it even more this time around.

I think it's the most beautiful place ever. When you think of the Caribbean: crystal clear blue water, you think of this place. It's just post card picture perfect.

There are only a few select places that I have visited and actually said "I will go back there some day" or "I would visit again in a heartbeat" (Chankanaab, Maya Key and LFK). After this visit, this is the only place that I said "When I go back there, I WILL return to this place!" I usually try to find something new and different...but with LFK, I have found my paradise and really don't desire anything else.

*The grounds are gorgeous!

*The animals are fun and a great experience and well taken care of

*The food was good

*Several beaches to retreat to is awesome

*There's plenty of space for everyone

*The jumping deck is a lot of fun

*The owners are delightful and kind

*The snorkeling is amazing

*The canoing is a lot of fun

*All of the additions they have made just adds charm to the place

My only complaints (and they are not really "complaints", just thoughts/suggestions if it was my place):

*There needs to be a better system in place for the snorkeling tour. There were no announcements of when it was, no direction or times. There needs to be maybe a "set" time for the boat to go out that everyone knows about. For instance-tell everyone that the snorkeling boat will take tours out to the reef at...say 11am and 1pm and you should meet at _____. That way you know WHEN it is and WHERE to meet so that you don't miss your snorkeling tour that you paid for. You shouldn't have to run around trying to find someone to take you. I hate the "unknown".

*The food-obviously LFK knows how many people they have on the island during the day. The meals should be prepared and ready (together). You shouldn't "run out" of a particular item or be waiting on it only not to be served the entire meal in the end. I know there's a lot of people there and there's no way that anyone can remember "Hey, we still owe them a lobster tail". It's just impossible to remember who all that might be. Although the food that we did eat was good and I was completely full by the time I was done eating, I love lobster and missed it (so does Sakari).

*The division in the lagoon created now because of Carnival is just heartbreaking. It was so natural and beautiful before. Now, it looks more touristy with the buoys and ropes. Then you have to look over and see and line up of chairs facing you. If people would have been in the chairs, it would have been as if they were starring over and thinking "man, I wish I would have booked that place instead" glaring with envy. :p

*Horseback riding. I follow LFK on fb and I have seen pictures of the horseback riding since they first began doing this. All of the pictures that I have seen online show them riding in the lagoon area...the beautiful crystal blue sandy bottom ocean. Riding in the muddy ugly area with sea grass and big rocks just does not make the experience enjoyable. I just wonder if this is now going to be a permanent thing, since the horse stable area is over there or if they will continue to bring the horses around to the lagoon area. Maybe it was just us and our ride (since it was complimentary). I don't know.

*Swimming with the jaguar-wow, hopefully some day we will get to try this (if not with Simba, hopefully they'll have another young jaguar that will allow it). Being that close to one was amazing. Swimming and getting to pet it has to be even more amazing.

*The price-I have seen a lot of people on here mention that the price is just too high. There are several packages to pick from, so the choice is yours. However, if you think about it, there are so many places to go to anywhere in the Caribbean and normally the prices don't come with complete transportation. So that is an added expense. Let's break this down a bit: Everyone on these boards seem to love Nachi Cocom in Cozumel. People don't think twice about paying $55 (I think it is) to go there. (Yes I know you are comparing green apples to red apples because Nachi is a true AI, but just comparing). That $55 does NOT include your transportation, which depends on how many in your party: could be about $17 for 1-4 people (coming from Punta Lagosta). So now add $34 to your round trip transportation cost and it has now cost you $89 for this trip. It's really not much different IMO than what they charge here with the transportation to and from the port and the boat ride to and from the island. Just something to think about. :)

All in all, there's not much that I would change about this place. It is almost perfect and we had the perfect day (even with a few bloopers).

I will always HIGHLY recommend this place to everyone on here. It's just that good! :)

I don't think the cruising speed had anything to do with the actual "ship" and what it can do. I know we arrived early at almost every port and you could see when we got closer, we would slow down so much that I would ask my husband "Are we even moving??" It doesn't take the ships long to get from place to place and they just adjust their speeds up and down to be "on time" but for the most part, they usually adjust down so that they don't get there until their scheduled time. We were running way ahead of schedule everywhere we went. Just my thoughts. :) I will have to remember to ask this question at one of the next meet & greets and see what the captain has to say.

So we were back at the ship now. We showered and got dressed and I decided that I wanted to go up to the Sports Bar and grab some wings or something. We sat down (others in there with food) and waited and waited. Hmmm, no one was coming over to ask for our order. I finally got up and ask someone at the bar about food-"We're not open until later". Well darn. I noticed on my way back to the table to tell the family that the people in there eating had food on their plate that resembled the food from the buffet. Ah ha! That explains it.

So back down to the buffet we went. At 5:30pm the Captain announced that everyone was back on the ship and we would be leaving shortly. WHAT?!??? I think this is actually the first time I have been on a cruise where everyone is back on the ship AT THE TIME INSTRUCTED to be back on the ship. WOW! Oh wait, I now remember that most of the people on the ship are older and probably not out getting plastered at some Senior Frogs. That must be it. We are on the "responsible" ship this time around. LOL

We went back up on the deck to watch the sunset as we pulled out of the port and it was AMAZING. The colors were so beautiful over the island.

PB110211%20copy-L.jpg

I will take this setting over a sun drifting into the water any old day.

PB110214%20copy-L.jpg

And finally it was completely dark.

PB110217%20copy-L.jpg

We dropped Sakari off at the Kids Korner and we hit the casino to kill some time while we waited on the show to start tonight. The hubby did ok tonight and won $70, but got greedy and tried to double that and lost it all. I managed to find "my lucky" machine and put my $20 in and played for a straight 2 1/2 hours on that same $20 bill. I went up, I went down, I went up again. It was a lot of fun and I always like when I find a machine that will allow you to keep playing forever.

We headed to the show and it was a comedian tonight. He was one that was in the welcome show and was ok. Not the best, not the worse, but it was killing time. One of the ladies (and I'm not sure who she was but she was always around and leading events like the work outs and the shows) caught me yawning and said "No yawning, you can sleep when you're dead" and then ask my hubby "Did you leave any sun for anyone else?" LOL

PB110220%20copy-L.jpg

We headed outside to warm up after the show...WHY DO THEY KEEP THESE SHIPS SO COLD AT NIGHT???? We headed over to the sports bar and was able to grab some popcorn. (I stand corrected in my previous reply to another poster...we were able to get popcorn twice this cruise).

Since we were unable to get connected to the Internet at LFK like the hubby had planned. We decided we would bite the bullet and buy a plan. We checked out the plans and spoke to someone at the service desk who informed us that you could use your own computer in your room and it was simple to sign up. Just click on the browser and follow the directions. We ended up purchasing the package that gave you 250 minutes for $100. (Little did I know that since I'm a latitudes member, you are supposed to get an extra 30 minutes for free with this package). <---I will be better prepared next time.

I headed up to pick up Sakari from the kids club and we headed back to the room. She had made me a lovely necklace that night and I proudly displayed it around my neck for the rest of the night.

PB280052%20copy-L.jpg

When we returned to our room, we had a gift plate waiting on us:

PB110206%20copy-L.jpg

I'm really not sure what it was (and have been served it several times before)...some raw looking meat on the round stale bread. It's not my thing. I appreciate the gesture, but it's just not me. You want to "wow" me send a slice of cheesecake! We ended up throwing it out like we always do.

This was our towel animal for the night and he was so cute. I baby elephant. This would be the first time that we have ever received one of the small animals on a cruise...made out of a wash rag. It was a nice surprise.

PB110207%20copy-L.jpg

More "junk mail" arrived that night as well.

PB280025%20copy-L.jpg

I feel so at home with the junk mail. I can only imagine how much is accumulating at home. One real piece of mail provided for every 5 pieces of junk mail. Such a waste of trees and landfill space.

PB280031%20copy-L.jpg

We watched a little t.v and Sakari worked on a few drawings that night.

I don't know if she had the mean old fire breathing worm that got her today on her mind or not...she started calling this her "dragon book"

PB290103%20copy-L.jpg

Obviously there was some mean monster fish down in the water.

PB290104%20copy-L.jpg

We knew we would be in port the following day at 8am. So we headed to be around midnight...to what I find to be a very HARD bed, but hey...tonight the room steward decided to push our beds together and let us be a couple. :D

I have a question about Little French Key.

Are you saying that you can't get there on any Carnival backed excursion? Or are you saying you can't get there at all if you sail Carnival?

Meaning, your posts seem like the place is not liking the cruise ship crowds, but then you are a cruise ship passenger. So is it still accessible by direct booking and then a cab ride? Or is it now a NCL exclusive? Just wondering because it was said a couple of times that Carnival people go to French Key and not little French Key. I have read your reviews before and find them to be some of the best period.

I was just a little confused by that part. Also it would of been a lot nicer had Carnival gone with a resort area fitting into the surroundings rather than going for the resort look. The before and after pics and remembering your review before (which is what put LFK in my mind) it's a very drastic change.

I particularly loved your review and photos of Little French Key. However, I wouldn't trust a jaguar!

Haha, yea I was a little reserved about being in the water around it too. But it is still young and the handler had a good gripe on him. I think given the chance again, my husband would elect to do the swim with it. I probably would stay back and take the pictures. :o

To book Little French Key, you book directly with LFK. When you are on Carnival, you can still book LFK using LFK. If you book with excursion for "French Key", you are not going to the same place, but the place across from there that is actually owned by someone else.

You cab ride and the boat ride over to LFK is all included in the package when you book with them.

It has nothing to do with NCL. Carnival is the only one that WAS offering an excursion to LFK. NCL never has and neither has the other cruise ships. Now Carnival can no longer offer an excursion to LFK, so they are offering a package to "French Key", which isn't the same place. :)

Hopefully that made sense to you.

It is now my morning ritual to drink my coffee and read your review. I have really loved your comments and photos. I just finished your graduation cruise review and Oh my gosh missing your flights, sounds like something that would happen with me and my daughter. I am always planning a year ahead and packing weeks before trips, she is a procrastinator and does everything last minute.

I'm glad you posted info about Southwest Airlines. We will be flying with them for the first time and not having seat assignments is new to me. I did get an e-mail from them about $12.50 per person for early check in. At first I thought why would I want to pay to check in, after reading your comments about $40 to upgrade the $12.50 seemed cheap. I also realized we will be on the cruise ship and won't have internet access to check-in until about 6 hours before our flight, leaving us probably last to board and stuck in middle seats. We will have a 4 1/2 hour flight so I paid for early check in and hopefully we will be able to get seats together.

We are leaving in 2 weeks and will be going to LFK for the first time. I usually would not spend this much money on a beach day, but your reviews convinced me. There will be 3 ships while we are in port and I am bummed about the carnival groups being right across the way so close. It sounds like maybe we can go to another beach on LFK that is away from where the carnival people will be?

I have been to Roatan twice and both times we got rained out and our snorkel trips were cancelled because water was too rough. Hopefully 3rd time will be a charm I will finally to get to snorkel here. If we do get rain is there plenty of areas at LFK under cover?

Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into doing these reviews, they are the best!

I am wondering if anybody here can help me out with a video footage??? Another cruise critic alerted me of this amazing review thread and I thought I'd try here...I'm sorry for hijacking your post but I'm getting desperate :(

My bf and I was on this exact cruise (Nov 9-6 Norwegian Sun), and on the very last night of the cruise there was a game to play as a group and gather various items around and gain points - the very last one involves having a guy in the group wearing a woman's bra and giving an older lady a lap dance. My bf was in the game, but unfortunately I did not have my phone with me. I saw many people taking videos of the game, and wondering if there are any of you on this forum that are kind enough to send me a portion of that video?

I understand the video maybe too big to email, we can discuss other ways to send it, ex. dropbox. I would really appreciate it and it would make my day! (I was so choked that I didn't have my phone with me...it really was a hilarious game).

This is the first time that we have ever decided to go with the early bird check in for when we were on the cruise. After the last time and as many people as we had with us, it just made sense to do it this way and it paid off pretty good for us.

I hope your trip to Roatan this time around is successful. I absolutely love Roatan and have loved every single place we have been each time we have went there. The island is just so amazing. Hopefully you won't get any rain. It rained the first time we ever went to LFK, but it was just your typical short Caribbean shower and then the sun came out. I just continued to snorkel when it was raining.

They do have several palapas to be under if you don't want to be in the rain. Then there are the huge deck buildings (the one you jump off of upstairs and also the brand new one they just built as well). Plus, now that they have built a lot of the animal cages 2 stories high, there are also places to sit up there as well.

Yes, there are 2 other beaches that aren't facing the Carnival island. No worries.

I hope you have an amazing time there. I know we did.

The game is called Quest. I have never been, but hear it's hilarious. Hopefully someone call help you out.
