casino dealer tips - confiscated?

In ANY casino, the tips are "pooled" for those on each shift. You'll notice that tips get put into a container,..and it's emptied each shift. ALL of the dealers on that shift split the tips.

 

Most restaurants (on land) have the host/hostess and bus person share in the waiter/waitresses tips, too

 

There is really no point to wondering about how anyone else is paid. Must be ok with them, or they wouldn't take the job!

I'm amazed at people that feel they must be incensed over what appear to be quite happy/content employees. To say you are outraged at a compensation plan that [outwardly] seems to meet the employees expectations is really quite strange. The employees don't seem outraged.

 

Frankly, of all the hardworking service industry personnel I've come across (I travel quite a bit with my job)...the ones on cruises seem to be about the happiest ones. Heck, you can stay up all night watching Youtube videos where they say they work very hard but love their jobs.

In other words, you're saying the setup is the same as for bartenders. That they're given a monthly DRAW against tips, and if the monthly tips are OVER the draw then they get the extra, and if they're less than the draw they don't.

I agree and to be honest only in the cruise world do people guess, care and talk about how much one is paid.

 

I'd never think to ask how much my trash man make, my mailman make, the bell boy makes, the doorman make, the hotel maid makes.....yet I tip them all......either on a per use basis or yearly basis.

I think that anyone who is so immersed with other peoples pay should HAVE to state their job, pay, and benefits BEFORE being allowed to discuss someone else's job, pay, and benefits. We need your point of reference. That way we can better understand what is so egregious [in your view] about these poorly treated workers.

 

On one NCL ship, we had 2 employees tell my nephew that he should get a cruise job when he finishes school. I can't believe they would try to recruit him for such a terrible job.

Just got home after a week on the Getaway and specifically asked a couple of dealers how tokes were split and if NCL took anything off the top. The answer was somewhat surprising but also good to hear: When each boat docks, the tokes are offloaded and pooled with the tokes from the rest of the fleet. Dealers get a share on top of what their contract guarantee is. I asked if NCL took a cut off the top or if floor personnel got a share and the answer was no in both cases.

 

Don't ask me how shares or determined but I'm sure it's similar to land based casinos and toke committees there and your hours/days worked will have some sort of influence. Also, I have no clue how shares are different for the different length cruises. Hopefully this sheds some light on the original question.

I noticed that no dealers or NCL reps posted factual information here as to how the dealers are paid. So, a good opportunity for some to make up facts and within moments they become reality? We will now probably see future posts about after removing the DSC we should also stop tipping dealers!!

As some have said, there are many dealers that I have interacted with that have been around for several/many years now. If it was a bad deal (pun) for them, they would be gone. If it is a major issue for some, ask the dealers next time how it works and if they are happy. I tip a good dealer in a land based casino and do the same on the ship. What happens after that is out of my hands and I will let the dealers and operators work out how they handle their jobs.

Why is it that everyone says they know how the crew/dealers are getting paid and say that they are getting screwed and NCL is taking the money or NCL is double dipping or NCL is triple dipping, when not one person on this site has any idea whatsoever what is happening with the DSC and/or tips or how the crew is paid. All they are doing is guessing, when in fact they have no idea and are just trying to stir the pot and/or further their agenda and then people believe what they are saying and then they run with it as well.

I thought initially that the OP's thread was about the dealers not being able to give the players tips - suggestions, advice and the like. :o Then it turns out this is yet another TIPPING thread. Oh, well.

 

I was on another casino related thread and the big argument was if bad blackjack players somehow affected the odds of winning by the good players who played by the 'book'. So if I ever had the desire play blackjack at a casino not only would I have to learn the game but somehow I have also have to learn how to play by that 'book' as not to offend my tablemates. In reading this thread I now have learned that I should tip the dealer too. Jeez, the casino is already stacking the odds against me and I have to tip the dealer for that privilege as well! :( That's like tipping my GP after my next prostate exam?:eek:

Wow, so the tips pay for the workers benefits and parties? So in essence, they pay for their own benefits and parties.....That sucks...

 

Well, I have been paying for my own benefits for the past 15+ years. The days of your company footing the entire benefits bill has gone the way of company cars and expense accounts...

I got to know a casino mgr. on the Dawn and he explained the casino as well as the art auctions and photo were all subcontracted out. The crew is not hired by NCL but by the company the runs the casino. NCL gets a % that's it.
