We have a 9 hour layover in Rome/FCO as part of our pre Jade cruise and vacation. It is a Monday in late July, do we have time to go to the Coliseum? Or dinner and some time wandering around/where?Our flight out is at 9:40pm and we will not have any luggage or bags. Our flight to FCO is overnight from the east coast, so I'm thinking that some time outside would be good for my son (15) and I and would help make the wait quicker. Any suggestions most welcome.

You can take the train or bus to Rome Termini Station (about 30 mins travel time) and walk from there to the Colosseum in about 15 mins. Buy your Colosseum tickets in advance on line or walk to the Palantine Hill entrance to buy them. The line for tickets at the Colosseum can be over 2 hours long, and there's hardly any line at the Palantine Hill entrance 5 mins walk away. You'll have time to have a meal and perhaps walk around some more as well.

You could go to Ostia Antica, just a short taxi ride from Fiumicino. It's seldom crowded, and admission is not expensive.

Unfortunately, it looks like the OP will be there on a Monday, when Ostia Antica is closed.

The plan of visiting the Colosseum is not a bad one. The fastest way would probably be the Leonardo express train to Termini and then take the metro (Line B) two stops to the Colosseo stop. You could spend a fair amount of time seeing the Colosseum and Forum (included in the same ticket), and there are plenty of restaurants nearby around the Via Cavour area.

Just be sure to check the timing of getting back to the airport. The express trains run every half hour from Termini only. They are not cheap and there are other options but those options do take longer.
