pride of America still docked at Hilo

I just read this. Hoping both are ok. Thoughts and prayers with everyone involved.

That's always a tough one. My view is they were the two crew in the boat being lowered, and when a boat drops, they can get very seriously injured. Injuries during lifeboat drills are some of the most common and serious injuries that mariners experience.

So, it would be the USCG investigating this, not only from the accident perspective, but for SOLAS compliance and to ensure that the repairs (new wires) are installed and the boat hoisted back onboard.

We had a similar incident on the Pride of Aloha years back, but the wire broke without the boat being on it, and we had to go diving in Hilo harbor for the "block" (pulley). We managed to retrieve the block and renew the wire between the crew boat drill and sailing time, so I suspect the delay was just to complete the USCG investigation.

I'm on the ship this week and we know that something went wrong with a winch during the crew lifeboat drill. One end dropped with two people in it. The Safety Officer ended up with a broken femur and needed surgery. The other crew member has a spinal fracture of some sort but is not paralysed.

We've had two more medical transfers - one via tender in Kona and one via ambulance at the dock on our first day in Kauai yesterday. I don't know what each of those was for.

Hubby and I are having a great time. Wish we could just get straight back on board tomorrow in Honolulu...

Thanks for the update. Spinal injuries are the most common when a boat is dropped like that. Another CC member is a USCG investigator, I've got him looking into whatever info he can come up with.
