How far out....

Around the U.S., they have to be 12 miles out (International Waters) before they can open the casino. Some cruises will be within sight of land quite a bit. I think when we passed Cuba on the way to the Panama Canal they said we were 6 miles away.

OK smart one:-)) Gee, can you tell I've only been on one cruise?? I'm referring to the Eastern Caribbean. I know we were close to some of the islands, but on sea days it seemed like land was miles away. Just wondering how far from land we actually were.

If you check the itinerary maps on the website, that might give you a fair idea. I believe a cruise ship tries to operate as efficiently as possible, and that requires the old "shortest distance between two points is a straight line" concept. (Only dodging to avoid territorial waters when there's no permit to sail in them.)
