New surveillance cameras on Sunshine.

We recently sailed on the Sunshine and keep seeing people with IPads stationed at various areas of the ship observing and documenting, they all had on the same clothing so I assumed they we all on some sort of assignment. We happened to be on the elevator with one of the men and asked him what they were doing.. He said they were getting ready to install 800 new surveillance cameras on the ship, they will be everywhere but the staterooms and the bathroom stalls! Thought that was interesting.

This is not surprising.

I do not think Carnival Corp is the only company increasing their security measures in the near future.

I am glad to hear this, I hope its fleet wide and the ports get stiffer access measures in place.

Almost every cruise ship out there has 300-400 cameras onboard already. I would suspect that the technology on the Sunshine may date back to the Destiny days, and they are finding it hard to purchase repair parts. They are most likely just upgrading the system, and adding to the number of cameras, for a total around 800, which is typical for newer ships.

 

And to be completely realistic, surveillance cameras are not for the safety or security of the passengers, it is to protect the company.

The cameras may be for the sake of the company - but with so many reports lately involving "suicide by cruise ship" I can't say I blame them. I always shake my head when news reports it as someone "falling overboard" since with the height of the rails falling overboard is next to impossible. :(

Not sure how they affect the safety and security of the passengers, when most are not monitored live, and those that are live are rotated through every few seconds. And if you think the company will volunteer footage to anyone, I'd be amazed. And unknown to most folks, up until recently, there were more cameras in crew areas than passenger areas, to protect the company against the crew.

Don't blame them at all. They were originally because of the casinos, and then extended to crew areas to guard against theft, etc. Now, with the litigious society in the US, they find that the cameras protect them from having to settle many cases.

recently on the sunshine, we had gotten friendly with one of he sales people, and he told us a woman had stolen one of their watches, they went into her room after she left to go on shore, and found the stolen watch, and she was let off at the next stop. they will be checking the balconys too for smokers, especially aafter the jumpers seem to be booking balcony rooms.go figure

Makes you wonder what goes on in the 'public' areas of a bathroom. I'll assume none will be pointed at the urinals.

I really doubt there will be any cameras inside a bathroom. There may be one outside in the passageway.
