Travel from Heathrow to Southampton

Recommended Posts

I have been checking car rental sites and am having no luck finding a Southampton airport offsite car rental open on Sunday (when our ship returns from a cruise) or on Wed. evening around 8 pm (20:00) when we would return the car. We are limited on a time to return the car because of our return ferry schedule in Portsmouth from Cherbourg. Can you suggest car rental companies in Southampton (not airport) that are open Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. Do these companies have key drops so we can return the car if the location is closed? Thanks for any information.

Europcar near cruise terminals is open from 10am on a sunday, closes at 6pm on a weekday but later return possible at an extra charge.

Europcar airport is open from 9.30 on a sunday & closes 10pm on a weekday

National near the airport (listed as Wide Lane) is open the hours that you require

but their city docks location isn't open on a sunday.

Enterprise (Alamo partner) near the docks is open sundays from 11am but closes at 6pm weekdays.

Their airport depot is open sundays from 9am & closes 10pm on a weekday

I don't know whether there's a one-way charge if you pick up near the port & drop at the airport.

But I'm a little confused about your travel plans - you mention returning the vehicle after returning from Cherbourg.

Are you planning to take the car to France??????

All sorts of problems & expenses (RH drive car, car rates on the ferry. etc) even if a rental agency allowed their car across the Channel. The simple answer is to cross as foot passengers & rent from Cherbourg.

If I've misunderstood & you're planning to return the car before heading for the ferry, as well as the rail service from Southampton central there's an hourly direct (or more frequent with one simple change) service to Portsmouth from Eastleigh station, just a short taxi hop from the airport - and even closer to National's Wide Lane depot.
