Specs Posted April 25, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 25, 2004 Hello! I have been a long time fan of your message board and today is my first time actually contributing to the board! I am a little bit confused as to which side of the ship is starboard and which is port side? I am going on an Alaska cruise this summer onboard the Coral Princess doing the northbound cruise and want to make sure I can see the mountains from my room! Thanks a lot for your help! Lidi Posted April 25, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 25, 2004 If you are standing in the back (aft) looking to the front (bow) starboard is on your right! Have a great cruise. Ella2 Posted April 25, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 25, 2004 Port is the left side, starboard is the right. You can remember this because "port" has four letters, as does "left". GFLeeper Posted April 25, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 25, 2004 Specs, I still rely on a phrases taught in my childhood, nearly 50 years ago. "Jack left port." Port is the left side of the ship when facing the bow (pointy end.) Enjoy your Alaska cruise! George
Cactus Posted April 25, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 25, 2004 Here is an easy way to remember - Port side is the left side - they both have four letters. If you see lights on planes and boats you will also notice that the left side has the red lights - port wine is red. Therefore - Port side is the left side and the left side is red. The starboard side is the right side. In the real "olden days" the left side was acutally called "larboard" or the side that was tied up at the dock for loading. Hope this helps. GloriaF Posted April 25, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 25, 2004 I learned that same trick when we used to sail our own little Oday sailer. I still use it. The trick when on a large cruise ship is to know if you are facing forward or aft! Kiddo Posted April 25, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 25, 2004 This definitely helps me remember: "You don't want to be 'left' at port". Kiddo 2000 Grand Princes (Med) 2002 Golden Princess (Med) May 22/04 Caribbean Princess
FredS Posted April 26, 2004 #11 Share Posted April 26, 2004 A phrase I learned is: "The PORT that is LEFT is RED". Think wine as port and the left light on ships and planes is always red. While right is a green light. The left and right are always seen as from the rear of the plane or ship.

pattie63 Posted April 26, 2004 #14 Share Posted April 26, 2004 Princess also has different color carpet to help you with Port/Starboard. On the Coral, I believe port had a red stripe and starboard had a blue stripe. Really helps when getting off the elevator! derf5585 Posted April 26, 2004 #17 Share Posted April 26, 2004 Now a tip to find out if you are facing forward or aft. Go to a porthole. If the water is traveling in the opposite direction then you face then you are facing forward.
