Early October?

Very, very changeable. Even midsummer it's wise to pack layers for all eventualities - Spring/Fall anywhere Canadian it's a necessity, and combined with being on a ship with extra wind chill out on the water you should be able to handle being outside in close-to-freezing weather with heavy rain, but also have appropriate gear for at least mid-20s C/75F in case there's a warm period happening.

At the minimum you need a water/wind resistant outer shell, a hat, gloves or mittens, mid-layers like fleeces or light sweaters, and regular shirt/T-shirt base layer. A pair on long undies or stockings under pants is usually enough to keep your legs warm, but some swear by a pair of rain pants on top (I prefer longer coats down to the knee instead). Stick in a pair of shorts in case it's toasty, and you can mix & match to be comfortable in anything the weather throws at you.

If you want to check the extremes of weather, historic stats for Montreal are here - check for your other ports and you'll see which might be even colder/warmer. Only packing for 'average' weather in this part of the world is asking for trouble, you really need to plan for the higher & lower ends of the scale!

You just never know when it comes to weather in many locations and this is one of those.

Could be warm or moderately cool. Could be sunny or rainy.

I would check the weather forecast a couple of days before you leave to finalize clothing to bring and I would be prepared to layer your clothing.

Our last time there in October was just a couple of years ago and it was cooler than normal and two years earlier warmer than normal.

You just never know.
