Ever sailed with Concussion?

I have sailed before on Freedom of the Seas and Carnival Pride without any sea sickness. I saw my Doctor today and she said take my medicines with me and to do what I feel like I can do :) I have earplugs that help a lot but still allow me to hear.

As for the seriousness I feel blessed that I am able to do most things. I know others who haven't had the same opportunity. Trying to figure out a vacation that is relaxing is tough with a concussion issue. Thank you for your replies, I know each individual is different and who knows maybe by July I will be better :)

None of us are physicians but even if we are we are not your doctor.

If this was me I would check with my doctor.

Wishing you all the best.

Keith

She said her doctor said she could cruise.

Then in a later post said she is having a MRI so maybe that might change.

your own pillow from home. IF you've found a pillow that works for you that is I could start a pillow store I've tried to many over the year's.

Finally my Chiropractor told me to get the pillow with the micro beads that are very small and squeshy. It works - I found it on AMAZON two for 25.00. LOVE THESE PILLOW's - be sure you get the very small beads though and the ones that are reviewed to NOT make noise.

Just a thought from one TBI cruiser to another ;)

Thanks Hugger! I found one at Bed Bath and Beyond that has given me great nights sleep. I have a travel version of the squeshy pillow with beads :)

Neurologist office called today said my MRI was normal YEAH! I go see him 3/10 to discuss meds for headaches and such. I will see if he will give me his approval to cruise. My brain injury doctor said ok but just not over do and have all my meds with me incase.

Everyone is different, every injury is different but to answer your question "Have you every cruised after a concussion" (which should not be substituted for your situation) ---

I flew and cruised within a couple months of a concussion / TBI / 4 brain bleeds last year. Neurologists (the specialists from the ICU and those that did my follow up) assured me flying was not an issue. The injury was March 27 and I was on a TA soon after.

Loud noises (not the dinning room but things like loud music) were not fun. Loud noises were going to happen at home too so I just dealt with it. I don't introduce OTC or prescription drug into my body unless truly necessary. For awhile headaches were a part of life. They got pretty bad at times but that was going to happen at home or on a cruise.

My biggest challenge for many months was balance -- I worked hard on this -- on the ship in the gym and at home.

We all recover in different ways -- I would never take advice from a people posting on an internet board as this was a very serious injury and all the "don't fly, don't drive long distances, etc." are opinions from people that don't know me, don't know the injury, don't have a clue. I also chose not to use Dr. Internet. I only took direction from the neurologists that knew my injury, my health history and my situation.

The great part of all this, by November of the same year, I was back on the ski slopes and able to be hitting the double black diamonds. It took a lot of work and great doctors.

Our sail date is 7/2/16 5 night cruise to Bermuda. Noises are not bothering me much now just occasionally. I am working on balance with therapy but on a whole that is pretty good too just sometimes I lean to one side or the other. My headaches are managed by several different medications. Amyitripline 25 mg really helped trick my brain then they added B2 400 mg and Magnesium Oxide not sure what mg. My main problem is fatigue and retintion. Headaches and nausea are now occasional PTL!!! First couple months it was very ROUGH!

Have you read your medical travel insurance very carefully? I say that because ours covers you for everything except medical conditions for which you have seen a doctor for in the last 3 months.

Our DD had a severely broken upper arm and got the ok to live as before :) 2 1/2 months prior to a Caribbean land vacation. I was told that if she injured her arm in a car accident or if she was on a monkey bar and fell and broke her leg that these injuries would be investigated and if the insurance company deemed that they may have been related to her previous medical condition they would not cover part or all of the medical bills.

If you experience some rocking and have known balance problems and fall and injury yourself to the point that you need medical care you need to make sure that you are covered for that or are at least aware that you are not.

I sailed on Princess just 2 months after a serious car accident. Had a concussion, very unstable on my feet when transfering into my wheelchair. Took a 5 day cruise in a handicapped mini. Best decision I could have made. Other than unable to even go up I step,(both hips fractured and bolted together along with my spine in 2 places) I had a great time, staff was wonderful, fellow passengers more helpful then I could hope for. I had my Dr's permission and my cruise sure helped with my mental outlook on my recovery.

check with your doctor about using an ADHD medication while you recover. I tried several different ones Ritlin and Daytrana patch worked best for me. But, each case is different:confused:

I had 2 subdural hematomas in December 2013, and finally diagnosed and ended up in Neuro ICU in January 2014. Home in a few days, gradually tapered from heavy meds to lighter meds. They had shrunk in half by April.

Asked the Dr if I could still go on Alaska cruise in May. I had already taken a flying trip cross country and back in April.

He said as long as I wasn't more than couple hours away from a hospital, that would be ok. We did stretch it a bit.

He said I should avoid any activities that might cause me to hit my head or even shake it hard. No float plane ride, no dog sled ride, no walking on a glacier.

Bleeds finally dried up in October 2014, headaches still continue, some days not so bad, still on meds, still seeing neurologist.

Someone told me headaches continued 7 years for them.

Make sure to check with doctors.

I would like to repeat what someone said, get a mid-ship balcony. The difference in movement will be minimal. I've been dealing with stage 4 cancer for 7 years and the one thing I love is the quiet time I get listening to the ocean. Don't forget that you'll be in Bermuda overnight and the views are beautiful. Enjoy your trip, praying for your recovery.
