Well, yes and no. Yes they sell them, no you cannot purchase them for use on board the ship. It's the same as the liquor sold in the store, they will be delivered to your cabin the final day of the cruise.

If this is true then they will be the first and only cruise line in the world to d so ;)!

That is odd, I distinctly remember standing in front of the duty free shop and discussing buying a couple of cartons of smokes for the son-in-law.

I also saw cartons of cigaretts in the shop on the NCL ship we were on last month?

I wonder, is Princess the only line to do this?

You are able to purchase (1) carton of cigarettes at any time of your cruise and take them with you. I don't know what will stop you from buying 1 carton a day.

We were on the Norwegian Dawn this past Oct. and I was able to buy as many cartons as I wanted. They said I would have to deal with customs if asked. I was never asked.

They seem to be the only cruise line to sell cigs in the duty free and then won't let you take them to use on the cruise. Luckily we stop in St. Martin on the 3rd day and will buy them there so Princess loses out on another revenue source. They can't stop outsmarting themselves!

Just returned home from Star this past Sunday. Can only purchase cigs in shop on ship to be delivered to stateroom on last night. Can purchase cigs in bars for $3.25 pack. We purchased 6 cartons in Ocho Rios @ $18.00 carton. Last year in St. Martin, cigs were $12.00 carton right when you got off ship at the shop on the pier.

  • 4 weeks later...

I called today regarding duty free prices and they said that they were the same on all cruises. As for cigarettes, they said you can buy them in duty free shop and take them w/you and not have to wait until last night. I hope they know what they were saying as this is different from CC reading I have seen. They kept me on hold for several minutes while they checked with a supervisor.

Sorry, but you were given the WRONG information. You will not be able to purchase them in the duty free shop for use onboard Princess. They will be delivered to your cabin the last evening. Plan accordingly.

After 15 Princess cruises, we have never been able to take them with us. Buying them by the PACK from the bar is the only way to purchase them during the cruise. It is a shame that Princess gives out wrong information like this as it does put some passengers in a real bind. We ran into some that had this very problem sailing the British Isles on the Golden this past summer, and they were really upset about it.

This is true. I was entertained on the Diamond while a woman got quite upset that you could not buy them on the ship and use them on the ship.

Of course as a smoker, I would never go with my smokes. The packs on board are 3.95 a pack and I was smoking Dunhills. Think of it this way. You get to eventually smoke the duty frees eventually

One time, sorry I can't remember which princess ship but I think it was the Grand, you could carry them with you and another time which I think was on the Sapphire, you could not. I bought my brother one of those giant 5 carton containers they sell and carried them straight to my cabin. Sorry, I can't remember which ships for sure, but I do know they were both Princess ships.

We just got off the CB last Saturday and I can assure you that purchased by the carton, duty-free on the ship can not be taken to your room but are treated as alcohol and delivered to your stateroom the last evening. The Sapphire in June was the same way. Its a shame customer service is giving out incorrect information.

Ship's price $21.95

St. Thomas $19.25

St. Maarten $16.95 (but very limited selection)

The ones we bought in port, we were able to carry onboard and straight to our cabin.

Still MUCH better prices than $45 here in Michigan

Since I was the one to start this thread, it was very helpful. Since then I have completed my Coral cruise to the Panama Canal and for the Coral you could not purchase tobbaco or alcohol in the duty free shops for consumption on ship. We were able to do so in port and were allowed to take to our cabin. Thanks for all the input before our cruise. It helped us to make plans accordingly.

......wow.....even the "full" prices onboard (in casino or bar) seems duty-free!!! Here in NY it is about 6.75 a pack!!!!! lol

We quit when it got to $4 a pack on the left coast. Put the money we were spending into a savings account and it has paid for three cruises so far...:D

If you run out before you get to a port, you can purchase individual packs from the bars or the casino.

Yeah, but if you smoke Marlboro, they only have soft pack at the bars. I prefer the flip top box. Yes, the cigarettes taste different.

Also, be aware that if you buy them in port, they could taste slightly different than what you are used to. It depends on where the tobacco was grown. The cartons sold on the ship, though, are usually manufactured in the U.S.

A little tip ... if you prefer duty free cigarettes from tobacco grown in the U.S. ... wait until near the end of the cruise. They always have a sale in the atrium on liquor and cigarettes and will let you purchase them and carry them back to your cabin.

I can't understand why Princess has such stupid rules in regard to cigarettes. Note that they also will not sell you more than one carton per person in the duty free shops aboard ship. Technically, you are only permitted to bring one carton per person back into the U.S. If they find more than one carton in your luggage, in theory Customs can confiscate them. The way I got around this rule was bought two cartons in the ship's duty free shop for delivery to my cabin on the last day (they had no way of knowing I was traveling alone) ... :) Then, towards the end of the cruise, I bought another couple of cartons during the sale in the atrium which I brought back to my cabin. Again, they have no way of knowing that I had already purchased two cartons before. I think in the end, I had bought a total of five cartons ... all aboard ship. I took my chances (as I always do) and had no problems getting them home spread out over my two checked bags and my carryon luggage. In fact, TSA opened one of my bags for a hand inspection and never bothered the two cartons of cigarettes in there.

Now contrast these Princess rules with HAL ... also owned by the Carnival Corporation. HAL lets you buy cartons in the duty free shops onboard and bring them right back to your cabin at any time during the cruise. They also don't restrict you to the number of cartons they will sell you over the course of a cruise. Heck, maybe you're a very heavy smoker ... they don't know ... :)

Blue skies ...
