Mike & Tracy's continuing adventures: B2B on Carnival Vista & Norwegean Getaway

We sailed on NCL last Nov and the cabins are much smaller. RCCL is smaller too, CCL has them all beat on cabin size. But we found the food better on NCL, loved the freestyle dining and the shows on the Jade were as good as the RCCL Allure. Much better than Carnival. I did find the seating, although plentiful in the show room, very uncomfortable. The aisles were too narrow for my long legs. I found a good seat and got there early every night to get it. I am looking forward to this part of your review very much!

The balcony cabin and the balcony were smaller than what we were used to on Carnival. Our cabin measured 172 square feet and the balcony was 30 sq. ft. Our balcony cabin on Vista was 185 sq. ft. and the balcony was 45 sq. ft. One thing we noticed was that there were no robes, Tracy used one every day on Vista when she went to the spa. She missed not having one on this cruise. Another negative was the closet was right next to the bed making it difficult to access it. On the plus side, the bathroom had a glass shower door instead of a curtain.

We sailed on the Breakaway last June and the hallways were more narrow and the balconies smaller than Carnival Ships.

Then you come upon an open area which spans 3 decks. It looks more like an atrium than the actual atrium. In this area, we have Le Bistro French Restaurant, the Asian restaurant Teppanyaki and the Headliners Comedy Club.

Headliners Comedy Club, if you don’t mind planning ahead you can make reservation at the beginning of the cruise either on your interactive TV or even better on the Norwegian IConcierge app as soon as you get to the port. I made reservation for two nights and we walked right in while people were waiting in line for the show. If you do not show up at least 5 minutes before the start of the show you lose your reservation and some of the people in line are admitted. You still have to get there a bit early if you want a good seat near the front. I preferred this over the lines you encounter on Carnival. However, the seating is moveable wooden chairs, which is not very comfortable.

Near the aft section of the ship you have the Mix Bar and two of the three complimentary dining rooms, the Savor and the Taste restaurant. These two restaurants are rather small while the third restaurant called Tropicana situated on deck 7 is similar to a Carnival size restaurant. It’s all open dining, like your time dining on Carnival. You can make reservation ahead of time if you want; however I spoke with some people who said they never had a problem getting in without one.

I made reservation for all 7 night ahead of time; we dined at the Tropicana, Savor, Taste and the specialty restaurants Le Bistro, Teppanyaki,Cagney’s and Moderno.

I also made advanced reservation for the very popular “Burn the Floor” show which was very good and the Million Dollar Quartet, a 75 minutes show which we would rate as one of the best we’ve seen on a cruise.

Forward we have the Getaway Theater followed by O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill which surrounds the Atrium. O’Sheehan’s menus are divided by breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night. It’s actually open 24/7 and it’s complementary. Carnival has nothing that compares other than the Red Frog Pub which is smaller, a la carte food and open from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Tracy and I had breakfast and lunch there several times.

Mid ship, surrounding the open area with staircase is the Getaway Casino. The casino is spread out and appeared to be smoke free. We never smelled any cigarette smoke walking through it. On Vista you could smell as soon as you came near the casino.
