OBC - Casino?

I've heard conflicting information regarding On-Board-Credit (OBC) and whether you can use it in the casino or not. Has anyone used the OBC offered by travel agents and RCCL's WOW sale in the casino? Booked on Harmony in June and my dad loves the casino so hoping he can use on the slots and tables.

Thanks

The casino uses cash. You can get a cash advance against your onboard account (which holds your OBC), but they will charge you 5% to do this if your onboard account is secured by a credit or debit card.

So would the 5% be charged against the OBC? Sorry if it's a crazy question. I haven't really played the casinos so its not something familiar to me.

All charges go to your onboard account. If you ask for $100 cash, they will charge your account $105.

At the end of the cruise, OBC is used to offset charges in the onboard account.

If my onboard account is a cash account, can I get a cash advance with no 5% surcharge?

Thanks, Bob. Follow up question: are you aware of any restrictions on the amount you can get from the casino?

I believe there are are restrictions, but I cannot recall details.

Perhaps Ellen or Ken will see this and chime in.

Just got off the Serenade. We had $300 in OBC, so I went to the casino and asked for a $300 advance. The cashier asked if I was going to use it in the casino, I told him yes, so he gave it to me (plus a $15 "service fee"). Don't know what he would have done if I had said no.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but if you have a cash account you're going to settle in cash, why would you want a cash advance?

It's a way of getting your non refundable OBC out in cash.

In addition to having a few hundred dollars in non-refundable OBC, I purchased a good amount of OBC in 2015 when RCI's USD/CAD exchange rate was quite generous for Canadians. Rather than paying for anything ashore at today's rate, I can get a cash advance against that less expensive OBC.
