Anything to see on private transfer from FCO airport to Civitavecchia port?

Hello all

Our flight lands at 1055 on a Sunday and so we have a little time to get to Civitavecchia port before the ship departs (I realise it's around an hour to get from the airport to the ship once we've picked up luggage etc). This might be a long shot but I was wondering whether there are any roman ruins worth a detour to see before we get to the ship? We have booked a private transfer.

Our son is now 7 and just starting to appreciate what the Romans did for us!

Thank you

The ruins of Ostia Antica are about five miles south of the airport, so a stop there would only take you ten miles out of your way.

However, if your flight lands at 10:55, best case is you leave the airport around noon. What time do you need to be at your ship?

Thanks so much for your reply, Ostia Antica is worthy of a day's visit, stunning! The ship departs 1700 so we won't have more than an hour or so to have a fleeting stop past something small.

Keep in mind that the driving route between FCO and the port is mostly on a major highway. Any deviation is going to add substantially to the cost of the transfer as you would have to pay for the extra time and mileage. We do agree with the other poster that Ostia Antica is always worthy of a visit, but one would need about 3 hours to truly enjoy a visit to these ruins (which involve a lot of walking).

Otherwise our suggestion would be to get to the Port ASAP, go through the boarding formalities and secure your valuables in your cabin. At that point, if there is enough time before the Muster Drill, you might want to leave the ship and either take the free shuttle bus out of the port or walk out of the port (via the old exit near the fort) and stroll around Civitavecchia for 1 or 2 hours. There is a nice promenade along the sea, a few cafes, McDonalds (had to mention this), etc. Speaking of the Promanade, you might enjoy seeing the statute based on the "Kiss in Times Square" which was a very famous Life Magazine cover photo after WW II.
